SUMMARY:Santa Cruz Pickwick Club presents: Christie Mysteries
DESCRIPTION:Over the coming year\, Dickens Universe readers and Pickwick Club members will meet for discussions focused on these novels and their lasting influence on the mystery genre. This year’s reading series brings together four landmark works of crime fiction: The Mystery of Edwin Drood by Charles Dickens (Penguin Classics\, 2002)\, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie (William Morrow\, 2021)\, The Murder at the Vicarage by Agatha Christie (William Morrow\, 2025)\, and The Pale Horse by Agatha Christie (William Morrow\, 2011). Join Dickens enthusiasts and Pickwick Club members on Zoom for a series of discussions about these beloved books. \nRegister via Zoom \nReading Schedule: \n\nSept 27: The Murder of Roger Ackroyd\nOct 25: The Pale Horse\nNov 22: The Murder at the Vicarage\nDec 27: The Mystery of Edwin Drood\nJan 24: The Mystery of Edwin Drood\nFeb 28: The Mystery of Edwin Drood\nMar 28: The Mystery of Edwin Drood\nApr 25: TBD\nMay 23: TBD\nJun 27: TBD\n\nRecommended Edition: We recommend the Penguin Classics edition of the novels for its appendices and notes\, but other versions are fine. First-time readers should avoid the Introduction if they don’t want spoilers. Download the novels to read at Gutenburg.org or listen at LibriVox.org. \nThe Santa Cruz Pickwick (Book) Club\, a branch of the Dickens Fellowship\, is a community of local bookworms\, students\, and teachers who meet monthly to discuss a nineteenth-century novel. The Santa Cruz Public Libraries provide support for the reading group.

SUMMARY:Dave Shaw (Santa Cruz\, USA): Planet Local Sharing Circle
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Local Futures \nIn our next Planet Local Sharing Circle\, we’ll be joined by Dave Shaw\, founder of the Right Livelihood Center at UC Santa Cruz and Santa Cruz Permaculture. The Center serves as Global Secretariat for the international Right Livelihood College network\, which spans eight campuses plus the Global Campus of Human Rights across five continents. \nCalifornia is a place of sharp contradictions: Silicon Valley\, Hollywood and industrial agriculture on one hand\, and on the other a dense\, often invisible landscape of grassroots\, local and community-based initiatives. Dave and his team have been working to make that second California visible\, mapping localisation efforts across the state and looking for the connections between them. \nThere’s a natural circle here. Helena Norberg-Hodge\, who founded Local Futures\, is a Right Livelihood Laureate\, and the Center is now working alongside Local Futures to build the California localisation movement and to host a Planet Local Summit at UC Santa Cruz April 26-30\, 2027. \nDave will share what he’s finding: who is doing this work in California\, where the energy is\, and what he’s learned from running a permaculture education farm of his own. Together we’ll explore what helps local initiatives find each other\, sustain themselves\, and build the collective power that wider systemic change requires.

SUMMARY:Taking Charge of Change: Five Fundamental Truths for Mastering the Chaos of Life
DESCRIPTION:Taking Charge of Change: Five Fundamental Truths for Mastering the Chaos of Life With Jim Hjort \nWednesday\, Oct. 21\, 2026 | Noon PT \nVirtual via Zoom \nHosted by the UCLA Alumni Association\, open to all UC alumni \nChange is the only constant in life\, and every day we are called to reckon with this. Today\, it may be most apparent to you in national or global tumult\, a career pivot you’re contemplating\, or relationship dynamics you’re struggling to tweak or adapt to. \nHowever it shows up\, you can count on the rug continuing to shift beneath your feet. And your brain really doesn’t like that\, at least by default. In its frenzy to find stability today\, it will leap to ways of thinking and behaving that will leave you feeling even more stuck\, stifled\, and afraid tomorrow. Yet\, if you are inclined toward personal growth\, you can use the tidal forces of change to propel you to ever-greater wisdom\, inner stability\, and even growth. \nLEARN MORE & REGISTER

SUMMARY:Archaeobotany of an Ainu Kotan: from Ethnographic Trope to Empirical Data
DESCRIPTION:Anthropology Lunch Talk with Emanuele Guglielmini — October 21st at 12 noon in Rm 261\, Social Sciences 1. \nAbout the talk:. Located at the northern edge of the Japanese archipelago\, the island of Hokkaido is often framed as the country’s untouched natural frontier. Its Indigenous inhabitants\, the Ainu people\, have long been a source of fascination in Western anthropological discourse\, in large part due to their distinct way of living that\, at the onset of Japanese imperialist expansion\, set them apart from the mainland Japanese. Despite decades of research on Ainu ethnography and history in Japan and in the West\, the image of the Ainu as a primitive\, non-agrarian society has solidified into scientific truth — they are one of several textbook examples of complex hunter-gatherers. \nThis talk takes an opposite stance to the characterization of Ainu subsistence\, rooted in a growing body of archaeobotanical evidence that tells a different story\, centered on farming and intentional ecosystem engineering. Recently acquired data\, in the form of macrobotanical remains from a kotan\, an Ainu village (ca. 1600–1800 CE)\, are presented and their ecological significance\ndiscussed. The case study offers an example of the value of plants in archaeological scholarship\, while also delving into the difficulties associated with identifying species from a fragmentary record. \n  \nAbout the speaker: Emanuele Guglielmini is a doctoral candidate in archaeology at the University of California\, Berkeley’s Anthropology department. Trained in archaeobotany and plant science\, he investigates the subsistence history of the Ainu\, the Indigenous people of northern Japan. His dissertation focuses on the study of macrobotanical remains\, wood charcoal and seeds\, from the sites of Karinba and Karinba-1 in central Hokkaido. One of the central questions he explores at these sites is the relationship between human subsistence and external social and environmental disturbances\, including climate\, demography\, and the pressures of settler colonialism. His work has been generously supported by the University of California\, Berkeley’s Center for Japanese Studies\, Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs\, and the United States National Science Foundation. At Berkeley\, he enjoys teaching archaeobotany to undergraduates alongside conducting his research. He is expected to complete his PhD in the spring of 2027.

SUMMARY:Carlos Motta: When Time Stands Still
DESCRIPTION:Carlos Motta’s When Time Stands Still\, the artist’s second solo show with the IAS\, features new and recent installations\, videos\, and sculptures highlighting the artist’s preoccupation with the historical and aesthetic productions of difference and marginalization that shape the present. \nThe selection of artworks in the exhibition explore the unsettling experience of living in a time that seems violently stuck on repeat. Archetypal figures from art history (a fool\, a siren\, a witness\, a victim) reappear in the current moment as containers of time\, bringing the past of imperialism\, colonization\, and displacement into a present marked by the rise of anti-immigration politics\, climate injustice\, and other forms of disposability. Some works challenge this violent repetition of time. The clock moves\, if gruelingly\, in an endurance-based video performance\, No One\, 2025. For forty-six minutes\, the artist undertakes to keep his eyes open\, witnessing\, withstanding\, confronting\, and resisting the bombardment of images\, both historical and otherwise\, that normalize harm. In another video work\, Gravity\, 2024\, performers enact rescue carries\, supporting each other until they can’t bear the weight. Together\, the artworks act as a proposal about how to rethink time—how to slow time—with a poetic and aesthetic cadence that might counter the numbing reverberations of living in the present. \nWhen Time Stands Still is organized as part of Visualizing Abolition\, an arts-based initiative that reaches across prison borders to create a future free of prisons. \n\n\n\nCarlos Motta (b. 1978\, Colombia) is a multidisciplinary artist whose work has been shown widely nationally and internationally. Solo exhibitions venues include the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona; Nikolaj Kunsthal\, Copenhagen; Museo de Arte Moderno de Bogotá; Wexner Center for the Arts\, Columbus\, OH ; Röda Sten Konsthall\, Gothenburg\, Sweden; Galeria Vermelho\, São Paulo; Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM); Tate Modern\, London; and New Museum\, New York (2012). He has also participated in major biennials\, including the Venice Biennale; Berlin Biennale; Bienal de São Paulo; and the Gwangju Biennale. Motta is Associate Professor of Interdisciplinary Art\, Fine Arts Department\, Pratt Institute\, Brooklyn.

SUMMARY:Victor ‘Marka27’ Quiñonez: Ni de Aquí\, Ni de Allá
DESCRIPTION:Organized in partnership with the Center for Art and Advocacy\, located in Brooklyn\, New York\, Ni de Aquí\, Ni de Allá (Not From Here\, Not From There) by multidisciplinary artist Victor ‘Marka27’ Quiñonez features a wide range of artworks  that issue a bold declaration of dual belonging\, including altars\, an elaborately immersive botanica\, paintings referencing visual symbolism drawn from textiles\, graffiti and community traditions\, and\, in a series called I.C.E. Scream\, large\, brightly colored resin sculptures in the shape of melting Mexican paletas (popsicles). As the exhibition title suggests (a phrase widely used in bilingual and bicultural communities)\, these artworks reflect the artist’s interest in the experience of living between worlds even as violent notions of nationalism and identity pervade.  \nAccompanying the exhibition\, Elevar la Cultura\, an immersive sculptural installation featuring a twenty-two-foot-tall pyramid built from ice coolers adorned with ancestral textiles\, sacred symbols\, and mural work will be on view at Santa Cruz Barrios Unidos (1817 Soquel) November 7\, 2026- March 7\, 2027. As Quiñonez explains\, this sculpture epitomizes the contradictions of living—and laboring—as an immigrant in the United States:  \n “Most people see the cooler as a tool for leisure…for barbecues\, tailgating\, and celebrations. But for immigrant communities\, the cooler is a tool and symbol for opportunity and independence. In every major city\, you see families and vendors selling fruit\, food\, and water out of these coolers on the streets and in subway stations. They’re a necessity for survival and a way to start an honest living\,” the artist shares. \nThe Institute of Arts and Sciences will be the second venue to successfully present Ni de Aquí\, Ni de Allá to the public. First organized by Boston University Art Galleries and curated by Kate Fowle in September of 2025\, the exhibition debuted to critical acclaim before gaining national attention after its abrupt removal from its second venue\, the University of North Texas\, where it had been installed just one week prior to it being censored.  \nVictor ‘Marka27’ Quiñonez is a renowned international visual artist who is known for his diverse works that intersect contemporary art\, graffiti\, vinyl toys\, fashion and design and art activism. Quiñonez has exhibited globally and collaborated with major brands while creating landmark public art in cities across the U.S. He is a Frieze Los Angeles Impact Prize winner (2025) and a Right of Return and Art for Justice Fellow (2023\, 2024).

SUMMARY:Zhang\, R. (CSE) - Towards next-generation infrastructure for agentic AI
DESCRIPTION:LLM workloads are shifting from chat to agents: one task becomes tens of model calls\, dispatched along a graph the harness holds and repeating the same instructions. This execution is structured and predictable\, yet the serving stack discards that structure at every boundary it crosses. I argue that agent infrastructure should treat execution semantics and state as first-class abstractions. My completed work recovers them between harness and engine: a policy-driven runtime layer and CacheSage\, which predicts when each agent returns\, cutting time to first token by up to 45%. Proposed work extends this across machines\, shared retrieval\, and reinforcement learning. \nEvent Host: Rui Zhang\, PhD Student\, Computer Science & Engineering  \nAdvisor: Liting Hu  \nZoom: https://ucsc.zoom.us/j/4646537931?pwd=aJHaERqBaST4DTj2SMJg22HgFeEjuN.1#success \n

SUMMARY:CANCELLED - Film Screening with Isaac Julien - Young Soul Rebels
DESCRIPTION:Due to rain forecasted this Wednesday\, we unfortunately have to cancel this event. We will be rescheduling for a later date. Thank you for your understanding.  \nJoin the Humanities Institute\, the Moving Image Lab\, and the Quarry Amphitheater for a screening of Isaac Julien’s 1991 film\, Young Soul Rebels. Recently restored to its original director’s cut\, the film is a coming-of-age thriller set in London in 1977\, the year of the Sex Pistols’ debut and Queen Elizabeth II’s Silver Jubilee. It follows two teenage best friends\, Chris and Caz\, who operate a pirate radio station\, the Soul Patrol\, and centers on the race conflicts and tensions among three popular youth movements at the time–skinheads\, punks\, and soulboys. Julien’s first feature\, the film won the Semaine de la Critique prize at the 1991 Cannes Film Festival and has garnered international acclaim since its release. Its soundtrack includes music by Parliament\, The O’Jays\, War\, and Roy Ayers\, among others. \n \nThe event will begin with a brief presentation on the film’s context. The film will be followed by a Q&A with writer and director\, Isaac Julien. \nFree and open to the public. Registration required. \nFilmmaker and installation artist\, Isaac Julien KBE RA\, was born in 1960 in London. His work breaks down the barriers between different artistic disciplines\, drawing from and commenting on film\, dance\, photography\, music\, theatre\, painting\, and sculpture\, and uniting them to construct powerful visual narratives through multi-screen film installations. \nHis latest work All That Changes You. Metamorphosis is an immersive ten-screen installation that opened in October 2024 at the Palazo Te in Mantua\, Italy and features internationally celebrated actors Sheila Atim and Gwendoline Christie. A five-screen version of the installation will have its world premiere at the Victoria Miro Gallery in London in February 2026\, and it will be featured at Santa Cruz’s Museum of Art and History in Fall 2027. Other recent solo exhibitions include Isaac Julien: I Dream a World at the de Young Museum in San Francisco (2025)\, Lina Bo Bardi – A Marvellous Entanglement at MASP in São Paulo (2025)\, Lessons of the Hour at MoMA in New York (2024)\, and Once Again… (Statues Never Die) at the Whitney Biennial (2024). \nIn 2018\, Julien joined the faculty at UC Santa Cruz where he is Distinguished Professor of the Arts and Humanities and leads the Moving Image Lab together with History of Consciousness Professor Emeritus\, Mark Nash. Julien is the 2017 recipient of The Royal Academy of Arts Charles Wollaston Award\, and he was awarded a Kaiserring Goslar Award in 2022 and granted a knighthood as part of the Queen’s Honours List in 2022. \nThis event is presented by the Humanities Institute and the Moving Image Lab\, and co-sponsored by Crown College\, Merrill College\, Porter College\, and the Quarry Amphitheater.
