SUMMARY:BME 280B Seminar: Dr. Paulina Tolosa Tort\, Postdoctoral Scholar\, and Erich Weiler\, Senior Systems Architect and Engineer
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the second week of our BME 280B seminar series\, a weekly seminar covering topics of current research in computational biology\, and bioinformatics. \nOpen to all\, food will be provided. Class enrollment is not required. \n  \nPlease join us this week to learn more about the works of Dr. Paulina Tolosa Tort and Erich Weiler: \n  \nSpeaker 1: Dr. Paulina Tolosa Tort\, Postdoctoral Scholar\, University of California\, San Francisco \nTitle: Understanding Heterogeneity in Neurodegenerative Disease through Genomics: From Patients to Genomes \nDescription: Neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease are becoming increasingly prevalent as populations age worldwide. These disorders show substantial heterogeneity across individuals in susceptibility\, clinical presentation\, and progression. Understanding the biological basis of this variation is important for clarifying disease mechanisms\, characterizing risk\, and identifying opportunities for prevention and treatment. This talk will examine how human genomics can be used to investigate heterogeneity in neurodegenerative disease\, from shared genetic architecture across disorders to variation in individual susceptibility. \nUsing Alzheimer’s disease and primary open-angle glaucoma as examples of neurodegenerative diseases\, the first part of the talk will focus on shared genetic architecture and pleiotropy between the two disorders\, integrating large-scale genomic and   data to identify shared genetic signals. The second part will examine how genetic susceptibility\, including polygenic risk\, operates in the context of clinical and potentially modifiable risk factors to shape cognitive outcomes and dementia risk. Together\, these approaches examine different sources of heterogeneity in neurodegenerative disease\, from shared biological processes across disorders to the interplay of genetic and non-genetic risk factors across individuals. \nFinally\, this talk will outline future directions exploring how long-read sequencing and pangenome-based representation may expand both the characterization and representation of human genomic diversity\, creating new opportunities to connect genomic variation with clinically meaningful differences in disease susceptibility and risk. \nBio: Paulina Tolosa-Tort\, MD\, PhD\, MPH\, is a postdoctoral scholar at the University of California\, San Francisco\, whose research focuses on the genetic and non-genetic determinants of heterogeneity in neurodegenerative disease. Her research perspective emerged from clinical training in medicine and ophthalmology at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM)\, where differences in disease onset\, presentation\, and progression motivated questions about the biological basis of individual susceptibility. She subsequently completed a Master of Public Health in Quantitative Methods at Harvard University and pursued doctoral training in Chronic Disease Epidemiology at Yale University\, where she used cross-disease genetic approaches to investigate biological processes shared between Alzheimer’s disease and primary open-angle glaucoma. At UCSF\, she investigates how genetic susceptibility interacts with clinical and environmental exposures to shape cognitive outcomes and dementia risk. \nHosted By: Professor of Biomolecular Engineering\, Dr. Benedict Paten \nSpeaker 2: Erich Weiler\, Senior Systems Architect and Engineer\, University of California\, Santa Cruz Genomics Institute \nTitle: Mastering HPC Workload Orchestration: A Strategic Guide to Slurm \nDescription: As high-performance computing (HPC) demands grow\, efficient workload orchestration and resource allocation become critical for maximizing cluster throughput and hardware return on investment. This presentation provides a comprehensive guide to understanding and leveraging the Simple Linux Utility for Resource Management (Slurm) within distributed HPC environments. Attendees will explore the core architecture of HPC clusters—including login nodes\, compute nodes\, and shared storage fabrics—alongside the central daemons (slurmctld\, slurmd\, and slurmdbd) that power execution\, control\, and accounting. \nThe talk breaks down the job execution lifecycle for both interactive and batch workloads\, detailing how Slurm evaluates job priorities using a multifactor system driven by job age\, size\, partition constraints\, and Fair Share algorithms (such as Fair Tree). Key operational focus areas include partition design\, backfill scheduling\, and the severe performance impacts of over-requesting CPU cores\, RAM\, GPUs\, and walltime. Practical best practices—such as I/O hygiene\, local scratch utilization\, and avoiding common resource bottlenecks—are highlighted to help researchers and engineers navigate queue mechanics\, optimize job scheduling\, and ensure equitable\, high-throughput cluster utilization. \nBio: Erich Weiler is a Senior Systems Architect and Engineer with over two decades of expertise in high-performance computing\, enterprise storage architectures\, and high-availability infrastructure. He currently serves as Genomics Systems Architect at the University of California\, Santa Cruz Genomics Institute\, where he manages multi-petabyte parallel file systems\, GPU-accelerated computing clusters\, and hybrid cloud environments supporting advanced comparative genomics and computational biology. Erich also provides specialized systems architecture consulting for prominent academic institutions and research facilities across the country\, including Johns Hopkins University\, Northeastern University\, and Claremont McKenna College. \nWith a deep background spanning Linux/UNIX systems administration\, cluster workload management via Slurm\, and complex high-speed networking\, Erich specializes in designing resilient\, scalable infrastructure for data-intensive research environments. His past work includes architecting a $5 million\, 5-petabyte high-performance storage installation for the NIH/NCI-funded Cancer Genomics Hub\, as well as engineering secure\, FISMA-compliant data deployment platforms. Erich holds a B.A. from Southwestern University.

SUMMARY:ECE 290 Seminar: "Photon Counting Detectors for X-Ray Imaging"
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: Jin Zhang\, Chief Engineer @ iRay Group \nDescription: “Photon-counting detectors measure individual X-ray interactions\, enabling fine spatial sampling and energy-resolved imaging. This seminar connects semiconductor signal formation and readout electronics to imaging benefits and practical limitations in medical and industrial applications. It examines charge sharing\, pulse pileup\, calibration drift\, and material decomposition\, then surveys clinical PCCT systems and detector technologies from Siemens\, GE\, Canon\, Varex\, CERN\, DECTRIS\, and iRay. Examples span diagnostic CT\, industrial inspection\, and laboratory and synchrotron measurements. The discussion concludes with research priorities in sensor manufacturing\, high-rate electronics\, module integration\, and quantitative validation. The central question is how to preserve useful spatial and spectral information at realistic flux\, dose\, and throughput\, and demonstrate improvements through fair\, task-specific comparisons.” \nBio: Jin Zhang\, Ph.D.\, is an engineering and R&D leader with more than 20 years of experience in medical imaging\, semiconductor detectors\, and AI-enabled sensing. SUMMARY:Environmental Studies Seminar Series | Caring for cultural keystones: Indigenous-led stewardship\, public values\, and tree genomics in a hotter\, drier world
DESCRIPTION:In person and via Zoom (Meeting ID: 978 5545 8946\, Passcode: 454736).  \nIf you are unable to stream the talk live and need to access a recorded version\, please contact Stacy Philpott at sphilpot@ucsc.edu. A UC Santa Cruz email address is required to access the recording. \nHost: Maywa Montenegro \nSpeaker: Diana Macias\, UC Berkeley \nTitle: Caring for cultural keystones: Indigenous-led stewardship\, public values\, and tree genomics in a hotter\, drier world \nAbstract: Pinyon pine nuts are a culturally significant food source for Indigenous communities who have cared for pinyon-juniper woodlands for millennia. However\, colonial land dispossession and federal land management have disrupted these relationships\, while recent droughts\, wildfires\, pests and pathogens have resulted in extensive tree die-off. In the Eastern Sierra of California and Nevada\, differing knowledge systems and unequal institutional power have limited effective co-management between Tribes and federal agencies. My work asks: how do we sustain the local variation and place-based knowledge that make tree persistence possible? I share results from three studies: (1) An Indigenous-led monitoring network tracking tree health and cone production\, priorities identified by Tribal Environmental Departments of the Big Pine Paiute\, Bishop Paiute\, and Washoe Tribes; (2) a regional household survey that examined whether recognition of pinyon–juniper woodlands\, climate change knowledge\, and demographic factors predicted four measures of environmental care; and (3) a genomic data set from across the pinyon pine species complex which revealed the geography of genetic variation and signatures of climate adaptation. Together\, these projects show how ecological monitoring\, public perspectives\, and population genomics can inform the future of pinyon-juniper woodlands and underscore a broader responsibility to support Indigenous-led stewardship. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:October Slugs and Steins with Professor Matt O'Hara
DESCRIPTION:The Flying Death: Poison\, Plunder\, and the Quest for a Miracle Medicine in the Amazon\nIn the 1930s and 40s\, amateur explorers and hardened plant hunters combed the Amazon in a race to unlock the secrets of curare\, an Indigenous poison they hoped could cure many diseases. The poison they brought north had a major impact on the practice of medicine as it became routinely used in shock therapy to treat psychiatric disorders\, transformed anesthesia and surgery across the globe\, and led to a Swiss scientist’s Nobel prize. Drawing on thousands of pages of archival documents and hours of oral histories and interviews\, O’Hara brings to life this epic quest\, a stranger-than-fiction story that moves from Indigenous lands in the Amazon to rogue medical trials to cutthroat strategizing in corporate boardrooms. He also poses searching questions about who receives the glory and profit when medical progress is made\, and who pays the price. \nMatt O’Hara is professor of history at the University of California\, Santa Cruz. He is the author or editor of four books on the history of Latin America. This talk draws on his forthcoming book for which he was named a National Endowment for the Humanities Public Scholar. \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Kraw Lecture: Could a “Super El Niño” be coming?
DESCRIPTION:UC Santa Cruz researchers are closely tracking the development of a potential “super El Niño” this year. In this Kraw Lecture\, two UC Santa Cruz experts will explore the natural forces that drive El Niño events\, how scientists forecast major climate shifts\, and what current research can tell us about the months ahead. While every El Niño is unique\, decades of research at UC Santa Cruz provide valuable insights into potential impacts and how communities can prepare. \nAttendees will also get an early look at findings from California’s Fifth Climate Change Assessment and explore CoSMoS Adapts\, an innovative project examining future coastal flood risks and the effectiveness and cost of different adaptation strategies. Join us for a timely conversation about what a changing climate and a potential major El Niño could mean for California’s coast and communities. \nSpeakers:\nGary Griggs\nDistinguished Professor\, Earth & Planetary Sciences\, UC Santa Cruz \nMike Beck\nDirector\, Center for Coastal Climate Resilience\, UC Santa Cruz \n  \nRegister Now

SUMMARY:Environmental Studies Seminar Series | North Stars of Emancipation: Navigating Movements and Institutions to Change Food Systems
\nHost: Stacy Philpott \nSpeaker: Antonio Roman-Alcala\, CSU East Bay \nTitle: North Stars of Emancipation: Navigating Movements and Institutions to Change Food Systems \nAbstract: In this talk\, Dr. Roman-Alcalá will discuss his new book North Stars of Emancipation: California’s Diverse Food and Farming Movements in Times of Racial Reckoning\, based on his twenty years of engaging such movements as both participant and (more recently) researcher. The book addresses how food movements’ racial politics and change-making strategies have shifted over recent decades\, in response to the interventions of activists and allies\, and in relation to the ever-vexing challenge of working across various kinds of difference. Antonio will present insights from North Stars\, illuminating the origins of right wing populist political strategies in California’s agrarian history\, dynamics of contemporary movement organizing among ecological farmers\, farmworkers\, Indigenous people\, food justice activists\, nonprofit staff\, researchers\, and others\, and suggestions for how to both diversify and strengthen the movement. Addressing social scientific and social movement debates about if and how social movements should seek radical change to society\, and how movements might navigate problematic political and economic systems not set up to serve them\, the talk will introduce the book’s call for a “North Star” approach to political change. Such an approach\, Antonio argues\, can leverage food markets and state policy even while seeking a food system (and world) beyond capitalism and the colonial nation-state. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:The Dominican Wake: Contradictions of the Human and Human Rights in the Dominican Republic with Dr. Génesis Lara
DESCRIPTION:As a part of the Sovereignty & Solidarity Fall Speaker Series\, the Huerta Center is thrilled to host Dr. Génesis Lara from UC-Irvine to speak on topics related to her upcoming book.  \nThe May 1961 assassination of dictator Rafael Trujillo propelled the Dominican Republic into the center stage of Cold War Caribbean geopolitics. This presentation places the Organization of American States (OAS) human rights inspection of the Dominican Republic in contrast to the writings of Dominican women to showcase the limitations of hemispheric entities of human rights in the Caribbean. The paper argues that in the absence of public platforms for truth and reconciliation\, the strategic employment of human rights and maternalism on behalf of Dominican women sought to hold the Dominican state accountable for state violence. Through the close reading of personal correspondence and state memoranda\, I examine how varying definitions of human were utilized by Dominican women to extract specific demands from Dominican officials. This presentation also examines the ways conservatism and rising Dominican radicalism influenced the demands women made of the state. Critically\, this paper excavates the central role of Dominican women in hemispheric development of human rights and reconciliation to argue for its inclusions in evaluations of the legacies of the Cold War radicalism in the Caribbean and Latin America.

SUMMARY:AM Seminar: Analysis of Flagellar Gait Changes Across Fluid Viscosities
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Dr. Kelli Gutierrez\, CSU Monterey Bay \nDescription: Many microswimmers propel themselves using flagella\, which are thin\, threadlike filaments that beat in a periodic wavelike motion. The flagellar beat emerges from the coupled interactions between the surrounding fluid and the active and passive responses of the flagellum. Previous studies have observed the qualitative shape of the flagellar waveform and the swimming speed to change with fluid viscosity. We quantify changes in the flagellar waveforms of \textit{Chlamydomonas reinhardtii} in response to changes in fluid viscosity using (i) shape mode analysis and (ii) a full swimmer simulation to analyze how shape changes affect the swimming speed. By decomposing the gait into the time‑independent mean shape and the time‑varying stroke\, we find that the time-independent mean shape changes substantially in response to viscosity\, while the changes in the time-varying stroke are more subtle. \nAbout the speaker: Dr. Gutierrez received her Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from UC Davis. She joined the Department of Mathematics and Statistics Department at Cal State Monterey Bay in 2026. Her research interests include mathematical biology\, fluid dynamics\, and applied mathematics. \nThis seminar is hosted by Applied Mathematics.

SUMMARY:North Stars of Emancipation: Navigating Movements and Institutions to Change Food Systems
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Antonio Roman-Alcalá has been participating in food and farming movements in California for over two decades. He’s founded urban farms\, taught organic horticulture\, and made documentary films about why food systems continue to be unsustainable.  \nMore recently\, he’s turned towards participatory\, movement-based research to develop an understanding of what “emancipation” might mean for those who’ve long faced the brunt of food systems injustices\, especially in a context of rising right wing\, racist politics at the national level. \nThe result is North Stars of Emancipation: California’s Diverse Food and Farming Movements in Times of Racial Reckoning\, Antonio’s book now out on MIT Press. You can find info on the book here. \nThe book describes a shift in recent decades of US food movement politics – driven by the greater inclusion and influence of people of color – towards more radical political ideals of anti-capitalism and anti-colonialism\, and skepticism of the state as a tool for emancipation. North Stars tackles questions of social movement convergence amidst the recent right wing rise\, and offers strategic and scholarly lessons based on decades of experience and analysis. \nCome join Antonio in conversation with other thinkers and doers\, about organizing for food systems transformation\, fraught times of political regression\, reckoning with legacies of racism\, and holding onto radical visions for a world otherwise. \nFeaturing: \nLeonard Diggs\, Long time Farmer and Educator\nMireya Gomez-Contreras\, Esperanza Farms\, Community Farm in Watsonville\nMaywa Montenegro de Wit\, Critical agrarian studies scholar at UCSC

SUMMARY:Rioters: Unruly Images and Freedom Experiments with Patrícia Freitas
DESCRIPTION:The Institute of the Arts and Sciences invites you to a screening of three short films by Patrícia Freitas about women and incarceration in Brazil\, followed by a conversation with the filmmaker. \nFleeing Firminas features moments of women inside the Women’s Penal Complex of Salvador in Bahia\, Brazil participating in the creative writing workshops . \nFleeing Roquelina follows writer Dona Roquelina’s release from prison. \nRioters is an in-production feature-length documentary that begins in the Lemos de Brito Penitentiary in Salvador and tells the stories of Black women from the post-abolition era in old Bahia to the present day; women who dared and continue to dare to occupy spaces that\, though still hostile to them today\, allow their art\, knowledge\, and ancestral power to resonate. \nPatrícia Freitas\, documentary filmmaker\, holds a master’s degree in literature and culture from the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA)\, and is an associate researcher at PAVIC—Researchers in Audiovisual Media\, Iconography\, and Content. In over two decades of work\, she has directed documentaries such as Ira (2004) on religious racism\, which received an honorable mention at Cinesul (2005) and the Ibero-American Film and Video Festival (2005) and was screened at the Ethnographic Film Festival (2005)\, Negros em Movimento (2005)\, about Black theater in Bahia and Rio de Janeiro; and Enquanto te espero\, a luz coalhou (2018)\, a poetic documentary screened at the Arqfilm Festival in Santiago\, Chile\, and Puebla\, Mexico\, among others. In recent years\, she has worked as an assistant director on the series Enredos da liberdade (dir. Luis Carlos de Alencar)\, currently streaming on Globoplay\, and as a researcher for the series Histórias submersas (dir. Paulo Alcântara) and Todos os sonhos (dir. Sofia Federico)\, both aired on TVE Bahia\, among others. She also served as an assistant to Joel Zito Araújo and Hermano Penna\, leading figures in Brazilian cinema.

SUMMARY:Reshaping representation: Midterm elections and emerging district map battles
DESCRIPTION:Congressional elections are central to American democratic representation. Their importance underpins recent concerns about partisan gerrymandering in the states and makes civic participation even more critical given the narrow majorities in Congress. Indeed\, the outcome of congressional elections has significant consequences for whose voices are reflected in state and federal policymaking\, especially when both parties have used redistricting strategically to improve their electoral prospects. In advance of the 2026 midterm elections\, this event will contextualize past redistricting efforts and explore some of the most pressing threats to today’s electoral process. Our panel will discuss the long history of redistricting in the United States\, differentiate between racial gerrymandering and partisan gerrymandering\, discuss the intersection of race and partisan objectives\, highlight the role of recent state independent redistricting commissions and California’s Prop 50\, along with exclusionary changes to the Voting Rights Act and recent actions taken by the Supreme Court. You will not want to miss this informative discussion as you prepare to participate in these important elections. \nThis event is the first in a series of 2026-27 Resilient Democracy events brought to you by the Institute for Social Transformation. \nFree and open to the public with registration: RSVP HERE to attend in-person or virtually. Questions? Contact transform@ucsc.edu. \nModerator \n\nMelanie Springer\, Associate Professor of Politics (UC Santa Cruz)\n\nPanelists \n\nSonal Shah\, Board Chair of Consumer Reports and Senior Advisor for Results Prism Advisory\nElspeth Wilson\, Assistant Teaching Professor in Politics/Legal Studies (UC Santa Cruz)\nErik J. SUMMARY:The science of life in the neighborhood—and beyond
DESCRIPTION:UC Santa Cruz is bringing Science in the Neighborhood to South County! Join us for our first event in Aptos.\nAre we alone in the universe? Answering that question begins surprisingly close to home. Earth has been many different planets over its long history\, offering clues about how life begins\, evolves\, and ultimately transforms the world around it.  Beyond Earth\, the question leads us to the icy moons of the solar system where hidden oceans may harbor environments suitable for life. And if alien moons weren’t enticing enough\, the galaxy beckons with billions of planets orbiting other stars. For the first time in human history\, we are developing tools that could search nearby worlds for signs of life. Connecting these questions—how life begins and where else we might find it—is the science of astrobiology. In this talk\, we’ll explore these questions and meet the researchers at UC Santa Cruz turning age-old speculation about alien life into a scientific search for evidence. \n  \nNatalie Batalha is a professor of astronomy & astrophysics and the director of the Santa Cruz Center for Astrobiology\, which aims to advance interdisciplinary research and academic opportunities focused on the origin\, evolution\, and distribution of life in the universe. \nThe presentation will be followed by a live Q&A. Free and open to the public. The event is in-person only.  \nRegister to attend. \nLocation:\nSanta Cruz County Communication Foundation\n7807 Soquel Dr\, Aptos\, CA 95003 \nParking and capacity:\nArrive early for best seating. Seating is available for 50 guests\, with additional standing room. Carpooling is recommended\, as there are only 30 parking spaces in the main lot. Overflow parking is available at the Rancho Del Mar Shopping Center across the street. \n  \nScience In the Neighborhood is a public lecture series hosted quarterly by the UC Santa Cruz Science Division.\nJoin the mailing list to be notified about upcoming Science in the Neighborhood speakers\, dates\, and event details.
