SUMMARY:BME/Genomics Seminar: Supervised and Unsupervised DeepGene Finding and Genome Foundation Models
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Mario Stanke\, Professor of Bioinformatics\, University of Greifswald \nDescription: This talk will explore recent machine learning approaches for eukaryotic genome annotation. Our supervised ab initio deep gene finder\, Tiberius\, correctly predicts more than four times as many human protein-coding gene structures as its father\, Augustus\, and in some clades\, it approaches the accuracy of evidence-based pipelines such as BRAKER. Genome foundation models can automatically learn annotation-relevant embeddings from unannotated training genomes. I will also present Vipsania\, the unsupervised wife of Tiberius. Vipsania is a genome foundation model that learns hidden Markov models to find gene structures from naked genomes using a BERT-style masked language model objective. Finally\, I will report on ongoing efforts to use phylogenetic teaching signals from whole-genome vertebrate alignments to train a genome foundation model comparatively. \nKeywords: hidden Markov model layer\, linear recurrent unit\, continuous-time Markov chains on trees \nBio: Mario Stanke studied mathematics and computer science at the University of Göttingen and UCBerkeley\, and received his Dr. rer. nat. from the University of Göttingen. Dr. Sheril Kirshenbaum will share her research on science in policymaking and reflect on her experiences serving as a science advisor in Congress. The talk will explore effective strategies for engaging policymakers and staff\, countering misinformation\, promoting evidence-based decision-making\, and strengthening the role of science in the policy process. \nAbout the speaker: Dr. Sheril Kirshenbaum is an Emmy Award-winning scientist and author in the Office of Research and Innovation at Michigan State University\, and an assistant professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences. SUMMARY:Precarious Accumulation: Fast Fashion Bosses in Transnational Guangzhou
DESCRIPTION:Anthropology Colloquium with Nellie Chu\nWednesday\, 6/3/2026 @ 3:30\nSocial Sciences 1\, Rm. 261 or Zoom \n\n\nTalk Abstract: This presentation takes the audience through the maze of dark alleyways of Guangzhou’s urban villages\, where small-scale\, unregulated jiagongchang sustain the “just in time” delivery of fast fashion worldwide. With an ethnographic focus on the Wongs\, a migrant family from neighboring Guangxi Province\, the talk elaborates the paradoxical condition of stalled mobility\, whereby migrants describe their labor as “free” even though they struggle to keep up with the rapid pace of fast fashion production. \nAs migrant bosses\, migrant bosses remain caught in the double bind of evading exploitation by clients and competitors while also exploiting other migrant laborers. Their experience demonstrates that accumulation by exploitation is a relational and dynamic practice that involves uncertain assertions of discipline and uneven power. Over time\, the freedom of physical and social mobility they experience wears off and transforms into a sense of freedom deferred. Stalled mobility highlights how migrant entrepreneurs like the Wongs\, and the temporary migrant workers they hire\, must negotiate the contradictory dynamics of mobility and immobility\, as well as freedom and unfreedom. These paradoxical conditions leave migrants vulnerable to the interests of multinational corporations like SHEIN that mobilize migratory labor power to serve the e-commerce platforms for global fast fashion.\n\nSpeaker Bio: Nellie Chu is Assistant Professor of Cultural Anthropology at Duke Kunshan University. Her ethnographic and interdisciplinary research focuses on transnational and domestic migrant entrepreneurs across the global supply chains of fast fashion in southern China. Her teaching interests include transnational capitalism\, migration (domestic and transnational)\, gendered labor\, fashion\, and commodity culture. \nShe is the author of the book\, Precarious Accumulation: Fast Fashion Bosses in Transnational Guangzhou (Duke University Press\, 2026). She has papers published in leading academic journals\, including Cultural Anthropology\, positions: east asia critique\, Modern Asian Studies\, Culture\, Theory\, and Critique\, and Journal of Modern Craft. Her work can also be found in Made in China Journal\, Youth Circulations\, and Noema Magazine. She has served on the editorial board of the flagship journal\, Cultural Anthropology (2022-2025).

DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Sai Teja Peddinti\, Google \nAbstract: As the digital landscape expands\, traditional models of threat mitigation and user support are failing to keep pace with the unprecedented security\, privacy\, and safety challenges. Fortunately\, the rise of large language models (LLMs) offers a powerful new paradigm for defense. This talk explores how LLMs are being leveraged to improve digital privacy\, security\, and safety from the network layer down to the individual user. We will examine how LLMs are opening new frontiers in cybersecurity and solving complex challenges\, such as: inferring device identities through semantic analysis of network traffic\, mapping global privacy trends by distilling over a decade of app reviews\, and analyzing user help-seeking behaviors across millions of social media interactions. Ultimately\, this talk will demonstrate how AI is evolving from a technological novelty into an essential foundation for scalable\, proactive\, and human-centric digital defense. \nBio: Sai Teja Peddinti (https://www.saitejapeddinti.com) is a Staff Research Scientist at Google\, where his research focuses on the intersection of Privacy\, Security\, Artificial Intelligence\, and Data Mining. SUMMARY:AM Seminar: Using Math and Experiments to Study the Control of Cell Metabolism
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Denis Titov\, Assistant Professor\, University of California\, Berkeley \nDescription: Cells run thousands of chemical reactions simultaneously\, and these reactions must be precisely controlled—like a thermostat that prevents overheating. When this control fails\, diseases including diabetes\, cardiovascular disease\, and fatty liver disease result. One key control mechanism is allosteric regulation\, where a small molecule binds to an enzyme and changes its activity. Allosteric regulation is among the most conserved features of cellular life\, yet the functions it serves remain one of the oldest unsolved problems in biology. Several roles have been proposed\, but since the discovery of allostery in the 1950s\, no one has systematically disabled it in metabolic enzymes and measured the consequences. Four technological advances now converge to make this possible. CRISPR enables precise genome editing of allosteric sites. Structural biology has mapped which residues to target. LC-MS metabolomics makes metabolic phenotyping routine. The speed of modern computers enables detailed modeling of allosteric regulator function. In this talk\, I will describe our work developing and testing the first-in-class biophysical model of a metabolic pathway that accurately predicts responses to the addition or removal of allosteric regulators. Our work provides a framework for developing predictive models of cell metabolism that can be used for drug development or for engineering cells for energy production and chemical synthesis. Within a decade\, we plan to develop a model that accurately predicts metabolic activity in any human cell type under any condition. \nAbout the speaker: Denis Titov is an Assistant Professor at the University of California Berkeley with joint appointments in the Department of Metabolic Biology and Nutrition\, Department of Molecular and Cell Biology\, and Center for Computational Biology. Dr. Titov’s long-term research dream is to improve the understanding of human metabolic pathway regulation to a point where we can accurately predict metabolic pathway activity in any cell type\, under any condition\, and in response to any perturbation. Dr. Titov is interested in the following broad questions: How does metabolic homeostasis emerge from the activities of individual enzymes? What trade-offs drove the evolution of specific metabolic pathways and their control mechanisms? How to effectively combine data and biophysical models to simulate metabolic pathways? To tackle these questions\, Titov lab is using a combination of biochemistry\, mathematical modeling\, physiology\, custom instrumentation\, and genetically encoded tool development to study metabolism in mammalian cells and reconstituted biochemical systems. \nThis seminar is hosted by Professor Nilah Ioannidis.

SUMMARY:Seminar Series | What you may not know about groundwater management in California with Ruth Langridge
DESCRIPTION:Host: ENVS Personnel Committee \nGroundwater is a critical source of California’s water supply. Many basins in critical overdraft are now being managed under the 2015 Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA) to support state goals of sustainable and equitable management. However\, court adjudicated basins that encompass over 8\,000 square miles and are home to nearly 11 million people\, over 4 million of whom live in disadvantaged and economically vulnerable communities\, are not managed under SGMA but under court judgments. The groundwater basins in the entire San Gabriel River Watershed and large areas of the Santa Ana Watershed in Southern California are adjudicated. Drawing from experiences across academia and industry\, I will discuss insights from having led projects in augmented reality\, accessibility\, electronic textiles\, novel sensing and displays\, and their implications for emerging AI-augmented interfaces.” \nBio: Alex Olwal is a research scientist and engineering leader focused on interaction technology and human augmentation. During his tenure at Google\, he founded the Interaction Lab and Biointerfaces team \, and tech transferred accessibility-focused language glasses to the Augmented Reality product organization\, where he established the Augmented Language Team. As an engineering manager in the product organization\, he evolved his team’s scope to deliver Human-AI language capabilities\, including speech perception\, natural language understanding\, real-time translation and captions\, and generative AI. The team’s conversational AI experiences for AR glasses were a key feature in the Google I/O 2022 keynote. Alex’s research has spanned augmented reality\, ubiquitous computing\, wearables\, and accessibility\, often leveraging novel opportunities in display technology\, sensing\, soft electronics\, and machine intelligence. DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Sung-Mo “Steve” Kang\, Distinguished Professor Emeritus and Research Professor\, UC Santa Cruz \n  \nDescription: Recently\, applications of artificial intelligence (AI) have far outpaced Moore’s law in chip development\, thus creating an increasingly large gap between user demand and the supply that the semiconductor industry can deliver. In this talk\, we will discuss the unique roles of memristor technologies that can be leveraged to develop scaled-up AI neural networks\, particularly spiking neural networks (SNNs) for brain-like neuromorphic computing and unsupervised learning with high energy efficiency. Open-source memristor circuit designs\, along with open-source software\, may facilitate the development of micro- and nano-electronic systems that emulate brain functions. In this venue\, we will discuss how to harness memristor- based circuits and systems to build memristor neurons\, synapses\, and their interconnects for ultra-high packing density\, low power consumption\, and the fabrication services needed to enable innovation. \n  \nBio: Sung-Mo “Steve” Kang is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus and Research Professor at the Baskin School of Engineering\, UC Santa Cruz; Chancellor Emeritus of UC Merced; and President Emeritus of KAIST. He has published more than 500 journal and conference papers\, authored 10 books\, and holds 17 patents. Before returning to academia in 1985\, he led the development of the world’s premier fully CMOS 32-bit VLSI microprocessor chipsets for telecommunications and computing applications as a technical supervisor at AT&amp;T Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill\, New Jersey. This work was recognized as an IEEE Milestone in February 2025. He has received honors\, including best paper awards\, induction into the Silicon Valley Engineering Hall of Fame\, the Alexander von Humboldt Senior US Scientists Award\, the IEEE Millennium Medal\, the IEEE Mac Van Valkenburg Circuits and Systems (CAS) Society Award\, the IEEE CAS Society Technical Excellence Award\, the US Semiconductor Research Corporation (SRC) Technical Excellence Award\, the IEEE Leon K. Kirchmayer Graduate Teaching Technical Field Award\, and the IEEE CAS Society John Choma Education Award\, as well as the Chang-Lin Tien Education Leadership Award. DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Katherine Bonini\, Senior Genetic Counselor @ Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai \n  \nDescription: It has long been argued that families are central to genomic medicine. Genomic risk\, diagnosis\, and management are rarely confined to a single individual\, and separating patients’ interests from those of their relatives is often neither straightforward nor desirable. Despite this\, healthcare systems in the United States continue to operationalize care at the level of the individual. This tension is especially evident in cascade screening\, the process of identifying\, notifying\, and offering genetic testing to relatives of a proband with a hereditary condition. Cascade screening can enable earlier diagnosis\, guide preventive care\, and reduce morbidity and mortality\, but its implementation raises important ethical questions.\nIn this talk\, we will examine how current approaches to familial risk communication place responsibility on patients to notify relatives\, often resulting in incomplete reach and missed opportunities for prevention. We will then consider alternative approaches\, including system-led contact models in which health systems directly notify at-risk relatives with proband consent. Drawing on public health ethics frameworks\, we will discuss a proposed framework demonstrating how system-led models may be ethically justified when specific criteria are met\, including considerations of public input\, opt-out mechanisms\, and a focus on actionable conditions. This talk will encourage consideration of how genomic care can be structured to better balance individual rights with broader responsibilities to families and public health. \n  \nBio: Katherine (Kate) Bonini\, MS\, MA\, CGC is a Senior Genetic Counselor and Core Faculty member in the Institute for Genomic Health at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Her work focuses on the ethical\, legal\, and social implications of integrating emerging genomic technologies into clinical care\, with particular emphasis on implementation science and equitable translation of genomic advances into practice. She has contributed to several major NHGRI-funded initiatives\, including the Clinical Sequencing Evidence-Generating Research (CSER) Consortium\, the Electronic Medical Records and Genomics (eMERGE) Network\, and the Human Pangenome Reference Consortium (HPRC). \nKate is an active leader within the National Society of Genetic Counselors\, where she previously served as Chair of the Research Special Interest Group and Chair of the Public Policy Committee. SUMMARY:CSE Colloquium - Learning to Image: Computational Microscopy for Dynamic Systems
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Laura Waller\, UC Berkeley \nAbstract: \nComputational imaging jointly designs hardware and algorithms to push beyond the classical limits of imaging\, enabling measurement of new quantities (e.g. 3D\, phase\, and super-resolution) with simple\, inexpensive hardware. These approaches have already transformed consumer photography; our goal is to achieve a similar transformation in scientific microscopy. \nIn this talk\, I will show how end-to-end learning is reshaping the design of imaging systems\, from programmable illumination with LED arrays to compact\, lensless cameras built from Scotch tape. By combining physical models with neural networks\, we can jointly learn how to capture data\, reconstruct images\, and self-calibrate systems that would otherwise be too complex to model. However\, many computational methods rely on multiple measurements\, limiting their use for live\, dynamic samples. I will introduce new space-time algorithms based on implicit neural representations (INRs) that jointly recover structure and motion\, correct artifacts\, and enable high-resolution imaging in regimes where traditional approaches fail. \nBio: \nLaura Waller is the Charles A. Desoer Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at UC Berkeley. She received B.S.\, M.Eng. and Ph.D. degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2004\, 2005 and 2010. Emerging tools such as drones\, hyperspectral scanning\, environmental sensors\, and artificial intelligence provide new opportunities for continues field-scale monitoring\, risk detection\, and precision management while supporting sustainable agricultural practices. This talk highlights several applied research projects focused on the use of drone-based sensing\, spatio-spectral responses\, soil and environmental sensors\, and machine learning approaches to address real- world challenges in specialty crop production. These projects demonstrate how sensing technologies and advanced analytics can improve field-scale monitoring\, continuous risk assessment\, early detection\, and suitability in food production. Building on these experiences\, future research directions will focus on the intersection of food safety\, organic and regenerative agriculture\, and precision agricultural technologies. \nBio: Hamid Jafarbiglu is a researcher specializing in remote sensing\, spectral analysis\, and machine learning for agricultural systems. His work focuses on enhancing food safety\, crop monitoring\, and precision decision-making in high-value specialty crops.\n \nDr. Jafarbiglu earned his Ph.D. in Biological Systems Engineering from the University of California\, Davis\, following six years of intensive field research. His expertise integrates drone-based remote sensing\, hyperspectral imaging\, and AI to identify crop stress\, pest/disease outbreaks\, and nutrient deficiencies at their earliest stages.\n \nDuring his tenure at the UC Davis Digital Agriculture Lab\, Dr. Jafarbiglu’s doctoral and postdoctoral research resolved critical limitations in aerial spectral measurements. This work led to superior accuracy in drone-based sensing under variable field conditions and the development of scalable image-processing pipelines and digital orchard models for deep learning applications.\nBeyond research\, Dr. Jafarbiglu is an experienced extension professional. He has delivered hands-on training in drone operations and geospatial analysis to growers\, researchers\, and industry stakeholders\, bridging the gap between data-driven innovation and real-world adoption.\n \nHis background also extends to the commercial sector; as an Agricultural Technology Evaluator with Big Idea Ventures\, he conducted technical and market assessments for agri-food innovations\, including early-stage bio-based products. SUMMARY:BME 280B Seminar: Speaker Dylan Shropshire - "How did Wolbachia become Earth's most pervasive animal symbiont?"
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Dylan Shropshire\, Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences\, Lehigh University \nDescription: Maternally transmitted Wolbachia bacteria inhabit roughly half of all arthropod species\, making them likely the most common animal-associated microbe on Earth. Wolbachia alter host reproduction\, persist across deep evolutionary timescales\, and move into new host species in ways that we are only beginning to resolve. Wolbachia‘s biological success now also underpins global biocontrol programs aimed at suppressing arboviral disease\, lending applied urgency to a foundational question: how did a single bacterial lineage come to dominate the animal world? In this seminar\, I will draw on my recent and ongoing work to explore facets of this question\, leveraging Wolbachia‘s evolutionary diversity and wet-lab tools to define the mechanisms driving this microbe’s success across the animal world. Collectively\, this work aims to clarify the determinants of Wolbachia‘s natural prevalence and to sharpen the predictive frameworks underpinning Wolbachia-based biocontrol of vector-borne disease. \nBio: Dylan Shropshire is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania\, where he leads a research group studying mechanisms of Wolbachia-host interactions. He earned his PhD at Vanderbilt University as an NSF Graduate Research Fellow and completed an NSF Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the University of Montana. This codification in an international treaty led to the conceptualization of Indigenous Data Sovereignty in 2016. Indigenous Data Sovereignty is defined as the right of Indigenous Peoples to own\, control\, access and possess data that derive from them\, and which pertain to Nation membership\, knowledge systems\, customs or territories and is not an internationally recognized concept. Practically\, Indigenous Data Sovereignty gives decision-making authority to Indigenous Peoples and allows them to decide how best data should be collected\, accessed\, and used for nation-building. For this reason\, Indigenous Data Sovereignty is inextricably linked to Indigenous Data Governance. \nThis lecture will dive into the why\, what\, and how of Indigenous Data Sovereignty. Beginning with dive into the history of genomics research and Indigenous Peoples. Then moving into a more in-depth description of both Indigenous Data Sovereignty and Indigenous Data Governance. The lecture will close with highlighting three real world case-studies of genomics projects operationalising Indigenous Data Sovereignty. \nAbout the speaker: Dr. Mc Cartney is a Full Researcher at the University of California\, Irvine and a Consultant for the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity\, where she works at the intersection of bioinformatics\, bioethics and policy across human and non-human species. Dr. Mc Cartney completed her PhD in Bioinformatics and Molecular Evolution from Dublin City University. After this she carried out a Genomics Aotearoa Postdoctoral Research Fellowship where she created culturally respectful genomic informatics pipelines for the project that were responsive to the needs and rights of Māori. She then moved Stateside and carried out a second Visiting Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Genome Informatics Section at the NHGRI. During this time\, she also conducted a detail in the NIH Office of Science Policy. Dr. Mc Cartney then transitioned to the University of California\, Santa Cruz’s Genomics Institute as an Assistant Researcher where she worked at the forefront of genomic sequencing technologies to develop more just genomic data infrastructures\, policies and frameworks for engagement. She became an elected member of the Executive Council of the Earth BioGenome Project\, the Vice-chair of the European Reference Genome Atlas\, and the Director of International Partnerships for the Human Pangenome Reference Consortium. She also acted as a “technical expert” for many international science policy initiatives including the DSI Scientific Network\, Native Biodata Consortium and the Informal Advisory Group on DSI for the Convention on Biological Diversity. Additionally\, Dr. Mc Cartney was part of the team to build the first NIH-funded Tribal Data Repository for American Indian and Alaska Natives.

SUMMARY:CSE Colloquium - Safety Alignment of LMs via Non-cooperative Games
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Arman Zharmagambetov\, Meta \nAbstract:\nEnsuring the safety of language models (LMs) while maintaining their usefulness remains a critical challenge in AI alignment. Current approaches rely on sequential adversarial training: generating adversarial (harmful) prompts and fine-tuning LMs to defend against them. We introduce a different paradigm: framing safety alignment as a non-zero-sum game between an Attacker LM and a Defender LM trained jointly via online reinforcement learning. Each LM continuously adapts to the other’s evolving strategies\, driving iterative improvement. Our method uses a preference-based reward signal derived from pairwise comparisons instead of point-wise scores\, providing more robust supervision and potentially reducing reward hacking. Our RL recipe\, AdvGame\, shifts the Pareto frontier of safety and utility\, yielding a Defender LM that is simultaneously more helpful and more resilient to adversarial attacks. In addition\, the resulting Attacker LM converges into a strong\, general-purpose red-teaming agent that can be directly deployed to probe arbitrary target models. \nBio:\nArman Zharmagambetov is a research scientist in the Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) team at Meta. His research primarily focuses on machine learning and optimization\, recently exploring their application in enhancing the security and robustness of AI systems. He received his PhD from the University of California – Merced. These efforts are developed in collaboration with growers and industry partners\, with an emphasis on methods that are robust under field conditions and scalable across production systems. Building on this foundation\, the talk will examine how similar sensing approaches could be extended to address food safety challenges in California agriculture\, particularly in systems transitioning toward organic and regenerative practices . By linking environmental variability\, water dynamics\, and landscape features with potential contamination pathways\, sensing technologies may support improved risk assessment and monitoring. \nBio: Eve Laroche-Pinel is a researcher specializing in the application of sensing technologies to agricultural systems\, with a focus on translating data-driven methods into tools that support decision-making in real production environments. Her work sits at the intersection of agricultural engineering\, remote sensing\, and applied machine learning.  \nShe holds a PhD from the National Polytechnic Institute of Toulouse (France)\, completed in partnership with industry\, where she developed an operational service to monitor vineyard water status using satellite imagery. This work fostered a strong emphasis on applied research\, system integration\, and technology transfer to end users.  \nShe is currently a postdoctoral researcher at California State University\, Fresno\, contributing to a research program that uses multispectral and hyperspectral data collected from satellites\, drones\, aircraft\, and ground-based platforms. SUMMARY:AM Seminar: Dissecting Complex Disease Mechanisms with Causal Inference and Deep Learning
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Dr. David A. Knowles\, New York Genome Center & Columbia University \nDescription: Many human diseases have a substantial genetic component\, which association studies are increasingly capable of characterizing\, empowered by ever-growing sample sizes. These associations have the potential to elucidate complex disease biology and prioritize therapeutic interventions. However\, it is challenging to determine the impacted genes\, pathways and cellular states since most risk variants are noncoding. I will describe strategies we have explored to address this challenge\, particularly in the context of Alzheimer’s disease. We have mapped genetic effects on expression\, splicing and RNA editing in over 10k postmortem brain samples\, enabling interpretation of common variant associations. We developed a Mendelian randomization-based causal network inference method to estimate how genetic effects propagate through the gene network to converge on disease risk. We show that deep learning models of pre- and post- transcriptional regulation can refine functional fine-mapping\, improve the portability of polygenic risk scores across ancestries\, and increase power in novel annotation-aware noncoding rare variant association studies. Finally\, we designed a CRISPR/Cas13-based strategy to perform isoform-specific knockdown\, opening the door for isoform-resolved functional characterization of putative disease-causal transcriptomic changes. \nAbout the speaker: Dr. Knowles studied Natural Sciences and Information Engineering at Cambridge before obtaining an MSc in Bioinformatics and Systems Biology at Imperial College London. During his PhD in the Cambridge University Machine Learning Group under Zoubin Ghahramani he worked on variational inference and Bayesian nonparametric models. He was a postdoc at Stanford developing methods for functional genomics with Daphne Koller (CS)\, Sylvia Plevritis (Computational Systems Biology/Radiology) and Jonathan Pritchard (Genetics/Biology). At Columbia\, he is an Associate Professor of Computer Science\, an Interdisciplinary Appointee in Systems Biology and an Affiliate Member of the Data Science Institute. He is also a Core Faculty Member at the New York Genome Center. His group develops methods to better understand the genetic basis of human disease. \n\n\n\nThis seminar is hosted by Professor Nilah Ioannidis.

SUMMARY:Statistics Seminar: Unifying Regression-Based and Design-Based Causal Inference in Time-Series Experiments and Crossover Experiments
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Peng Ding\, Associate Professor\, UC Berkeley \nDescription: I will present some recent results on unifying regression-based and design-based causal inference in time-series experiments and crossover experiments. Part I: Time-series experiments\, also called switchback experiments or N-of-1 trials\, play increasingly important roles in modern applications in medical and industrial areas. Under the potential outcomes framework\, recent research has studied time-series experiments from the design-based perspective\, relying solely on the randomness in the design to drive the statistical inference. Focusing on simpler statistical methods\, we examine the design-based properties of regression- based methods for estimating treatment effects in time-series experiments. We demonstrate that the treatment effects of interest can be consistently estimated using ordinary least squares with an appropriately specified working model and transformed regressors. Additionally\, we show that asymptotically\, the heteroskedasticity and autocorrelation consistent variance estimators provide conservative estimates of the true\, design-based variances. This part is based on https://arxiv.org/pdf/2510.22864  \nPart II: Crossover designs randomly assign each unit to receive a sequence of treatments. By comparing outcomes within the same unit\, these designs can effectively eliminate between-unit variation and facilitate the identification of both instantaneous effects of current treatments and carryover effects from past treatments. They are widely used in traditional biomedical studies and are increasingly adopted in modern digital platforms. However\, standard analyses of crossover designs often rely on strong parametric models\, making inference vulnerable to model misspecification. We unify the analysis of crossover designs using least squares\, with restrictions on the coefficients and weights on the units. Based on the theory\, we recommend specifying the regression function\, weighting scheme\, and coefficient restrictions to assess identifiability\, construct efficient estimators\, and estimate variances in a unified manner. SUMMARY:Seminar Series | Is the Farm a Digital Factory?: Labor\, Leafy Greens\, and the Limits of Automation with Summer Sullivan
DESCRIPTION:Host:Madeleine Fairbairn \nSilicon Valley investors\, entrepreneurs\, and engineers are increasingly interested in agriculture as a site to disrupt and improve upon with their technologies. The nearby Salinas Valley – known as the Salad Bowl of the World – might be considered a “ground zero” for these operations of technological introduction\, with some calling it the Silicon Valley of Agriculture. This exit talk showcases my research on the evolving context in which new technologies are transforming social and environmental relations\, especially for already exploited\, racialized workers in the Salinas Valley. I trace the uneven ways in which agricultural automation is unfolding\, but also its profound limits within the region’s delicate\, leafy farming systems. Through interviews\, focus groups\, participant observation\, and historical analysis\, I will show how the materiality of crops such as lettuce continues to organize labor and limit full automation. This requires upgrading the operation of power grid from passive and manual applications to making complex decisions in real-time to facilitate the automated recovery of the system after major disturbances. DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Derek Hollenbeck\, postdoctoral research scholar\, University of California\, Merced  \nDescription: Advances in drone-based environmental sensing\, atmospheric modeling\, and intelligent monitoring systems are creating new opportunities for addressing emerging challenges in food safety and agricultural resilience. This talk explores how methodologies originally developed for methane emission detection and quantification could be translated toward agricultural and food safety applications. The presentation begins with an overview of research experiences in autonomous sensing and environmental monitoring\, including work associated with the inaugural CITRIS Aviation Prize before outlining some key potential areas for food safety with drones. Then\, the talk overviews previous research on the topics related to drone-based environmental monitoring\, Digital Twins\, and Smart Sensing – with a focus on methane emission source quantification\, atmospheric transport modeling of a point source\, and inverse problem methodologies for real-time parameter estimation. Finally\, the talk examines how these concepts may be adapted to food safety research questions\, as well as highlight opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration alongside emerging priorities from organizations and certification frameworks. \nBio: Derek Hollenbeck is a postdoctoral research scholar at the University of California\, Merced (UCM)\, where he serves as the manager of the Center for Methane Emissions Research and Innovation (CMERI) under the supervision of Dr. YangQuan Chen. He earned his B.Sc. (2016) and Ph.D. (2023) in Mechanical Engineering from UCM\, where he conducted research in the Mechatronics Embedded Systems and Automation (MESA) Lab.\n \nHis work sits at the intersection of fluid mechanics\, controls\, dynamics\, and inverse problems\, with a focus on developing intelligent environmental monitoring systems using small unmanned aerial systems (sUAS). SUMMARY:CSE Colloquium - The EU’s Cybersecurity Framework: what it is\, what it means
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Chris Jay Hoofnagle\, Frederik Zuiderveen Borgesius\, Lothar Determann\, Pieter T.J. Wolters \nAbstract: \nThe European Union has enacted a comprehensive cybersecurity framework (the “Framework”) that imposes far-reaching obligations on developers of standalone software and connected products. This Article describes the European legislative approach before turning to a description of the Framework. Anchored by the Cyber Resilience Act and the Cybersecurity Act\, and reinforced by a constellation of sector-specific measures\, the Framework effectively creates a California-like-products-liability regime for software. It mandates extensive security-by-design obligations\, imposes stringent conformity assessment and incident-reporting duties\, and shifts substantial compliance burdens onto manufacturers\, importers\, and distributors. It even treats emotional wrongs caused by software as injurious. SUMMARY:Statistics Seminar: Learning under Constraints and Extremes: Methods and Applications in Energy Systems
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Yu Zhang\, Associate Professor\, ECE Department of UC\, Santa Cruz \nDescription: Modern cyber-physical systems present statistical learning problems that deviate significantly from standard i.i.d. supervised settings. In particular\, two challenges frequently arise: (i) learning under hard structural constraints\, and (ii) learning under severe distributional imbalance and rare events. In this talk\, I present two case studies from energy systems that illustrate these challenges and motivate new learning paradigms. First\, I consider the problem of approximating the solution map of the AC optimal power flow (AC-OPF)\, a nonlinear and nonconvex optimization problem governing power grid operations. Rather than relying solely on labeled optimal solutions\, we develop both unsupervised and semi-supervised physics-informed learning frameworks that incorporate equality constraints directly into the training objective via augmented Lagrangian formulations and implicit gradient estimation. These approaches enable data-efficient learning while maintaining physical feasibility\, and can be interpreted as constrained function estimation where physical laws provide structural supervision. Second\, I discuss short-term power outage forecasting under extreme weather conditions\, where the data exhibit zero inflation\, heavy tails\, and strong temporal dependence. We propose a two-stage modeling framework that separates event occurrence and magnitude\, combining calibrated classification with Tweedie-based regression to better capture rare but high-impact events. Together\, these examples highlight a unifying theme: modern applications often require learning methods that effectively integrate domain structure while remaining robust to challenging data characteristics such as sparsity and extreme events. I conclude with a discussion of broader implications for scalable learning\, uncertainty handling\, and decision-making in complex systems. \nAbout the speaker: Dr. Yu Zhang is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of California\, Santa Cruz. He received his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Minnesota\, followed by postdoctoral appointments at the University of California\, Berkeley and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Dr. Zhang’s research advances the resilience\, efficiency\, and sustainability of modern electric power systems through innovations in AI-driven optimization\, machine learning\, and dynamic decision-making. His work develops physics-aware learning methods\, stochastic and robust optimization techniques\, and cyber-physical coordination frameworks to support reliable grid operations under uncertainty. Recent projects include learning-augmented outage forecasting\, planning for weather-driven grid hardening\, and integrating large flexible loads such as data centers into market and operational strategies. Dr. Zhang has been recognized with multiple awards\, including the 2025 Outstanding Young Investigator Award from the Energy Systems Division of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE)\, the 2021 Early Career Best Paper Award from the INFORMS Energy\, Natural Resources\, and the Environment (ENRE) Section\, and the 2019 Hellman Fellowship. \nThis seminar is hosted by Professor Allen Kei. \n
