A UC Santa Cruz email address is required to access the recording. \nHost: Elliott Campbell \nSpeaker: Siyu Luo\, UC Santa Cruz\, ENVS \nTitle: Exit Talk: Geospatial Optimization of California’s Organic Waste Diversion System: Transportation\, Compliance\, and Infrastructure Planning \nAbstract: Organic waste decomposition in landfills is a major source of anthropogenic methane\, a greenhouse gas with approximately 86 times the warming effect of carbon dioxide over 20 years. California’s Senate Bill 1383 (SB 1383) requires a 75% reduction in organic waste disposal relative to 2014 levels\, creating substantial infrastructure and logistical challenges. This dissertation develops statewide geospatial optimization frameworks linking 447 waste generating jurisdictions\, approximately 200 composting facilities\, agricultural working lands\, and transportation networks. I examine the spatial alignment of waste generation\, processing capacity\, and cropland demand; the effects of alternative compliance structures on costs and greenhouse gas emissions; and the siting of additional composting infrastructure under economic\, logistical\, and regulatory constraints. Results show that strong spatial differences in waste generation\, processing capacity\, transportation\, and compost end use shape system performance and regional burdens. Statewide coordination can reduce costs and emissions by shifting diversion toward lower cost locations\, while jurisdiction level compliance promotes broader participation. Substantial additional processing capacity is still required\, and siting is constrained by transportation\, water and air quality regulation\, and limited VOC Emission Reduction Credit availability. Overall\, effective diversion requires coordinated planning of infrastructure\, compliance\, end use markets\, and environmental regulation. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:The Institute of the Arts and Sciences invites you to a screening of the video-performance Under the Mantle of an Idocile Dream (Bruna Castro\, Brasil\, 2026)\, followed by a conversation between Denise Carrascosa and Gina Dent around the historical\, political and spiritual relations between Afro-Brazilian ancestrality\, visual arts and abolition feminism in Brazil. \nDenise Carrascosa is a writer\, lawyer\, and full professor of literature at the Federal University of Bahia\, in Brasil. She holds a Ph.D. in Theory and Criticism of Literature and Culture (UFBA) and completed postdoctoral studies in the History of Slavery in Brasil (UFRB). In 2010\, she launched the abolitionist project Indocile Bodies and Free Minds: an art-education program for literary writing at the Women’s Prison Complex in Bahia\, where she established\, together with sentenced women inmates\, the Free Minds Library (2012)\, enabling Sisters inside to access sentence remission through reading. \nGina Dent is Professor of Humanities and Faculty Director of the Institute of the Arts & Sciences at the University of California\, Santa Cruz\, where she has won awards for her teaching (Dizikes Faculty Teaching Award)\, advocacy (Chancellor’s Award for Diversity)\, and research (Innovator of the Year). Currently\, she serves as Principal Investigator and Co-Director for Visualizing Abolition\, a multidisciplinary project—involving exhibitions\, events\, fellowships\, and academic programs—addressing the global crisis of incarceration through art and visual culture. Her recent collaborative projects grow out of her decades-long work as a social justice advocate—Abolition. Feminism. Now. (co-authored with Angela Davis\, Erica Meiners\, and Beth Richie\, Haymarket 2022)\, and Seeing through Stone (exhibition catalog\, Marquand 2024). She works with several organizations nationally and internationally\, including Columbia University’s Center for Justice and Australia’s Sisters Inside\, primarily on justice-related concerns.

A UC Santa Cruz email address is required to access the recording. \nHost: Maywa Montenegro \nSpeaker: Diana Macias\, UC Berkeley \nTitle: Caring for cultural keystones: Indigenous-led stewardship\, public values\, and tree genomics in a hotter\, drier world \nAbstract: Pinyon pine nuts are a culturally significant food source for Indigenous communities who have cared for pinyon-juniper woodlands for millennia. However\, colonial land dispossession and federal land management have disrupted these relationships\, while recent droughts\, wildfires\, pests and pathogens have resulted in extensive tree die-off. In the Eastern Sierra of California and Nevada\, differing knowledge systems and unequal institutional power have limited effective co-management between Tribes and federal agencies. My work asks: how do we sustain the local variation and place-based knowledge that make tree persistence possible? I share results from three studies: (1) An Indigenous-led monitoring network tracking tree health and cone production\, priorities identified by Tribal Environmental Departments of the Big Pine Paiute\, Bishop Paiute\, and Washoe Tribes; (2) a regional household survey that examined whether recognition of pinyon–juniper woodlands\, climate change knowledge\, and demographic factors predicted four measures of environmental care; and (3) a genomic data set from across the pinyon pine species complex which revealed the geography of genetic variation and signatures of climate adaptation. Together\, these projects show how ecological monitoring\, public perspectives\, and population genomics can inform the future of pinyon-juniper woodlands and underscore a broader responsibility to support Indigenous-led stewardship. \n  \n  \n

A UC Santa Cruz email address is required to access the recording. \nHost: Stacy Philpott \nSpeaker: Antonio Roman-Alcala\, CSU East Bay \nTitle: North Stars of Emancipation: Navigating Movements and Institutions to Change Food Systems \nAbstract: In this talk\, Dr. Roman-Alcalá will discuss his new book North Stars of Emancipation: California’s Diverse Food and Farming Movements in Times of Racial Reckoning\, based on his twenty years of engaging such movements as both participant and (more recently) researcher. The book addresses how food movements’ racial politics and change-making strategies have shifted over recent decades\, in response to the interventions of activists and allies\, and in relation to the ever-vexing challenge of working across various kinds of difference. Antonio will present insights from North Stars\, illuminating the origins of right wing populist political strategies in California’s agrarian history\, dynamics of contemporary movement organizing among ecological farmers\, farmworkers\, Indigenous people\, food justice activists\, nonprofit staff\, researchers\, and others\, and suggestions for how to both diversify and strengthen the movement. Addressing social scientific and social movement debates about if and how social movements should seek radical change to society\, and how movements might navigate problematic political and economic systems not set up to serve them\, the talk will introduce the book’s call for a “North Star” approach to political change. Such an approach\, Antonio argues\, can leverage food markets and state policy even while seeking a food system (and world) beyond capitalism and the colonial nation-state. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:The Dominican Wake: Contradictions of the Human and Human Rights in the Dominican Republic with Dr. Génesis Lara
DESCRIPTION:As a part of the Sovereignty & Solidarity Fall Speaker Series\, the Huerta Center is thrilled to host Dr. Génesis Lara from UC-Irvine to speak on topics related to her upcoming book.  \nThe May 1961 assassination of dictator Rafael Trujillo propelled the Dominican Republic into the center stage of Cold War Caribbean geopolitics. This presentation places the Organization of American States (OAS) human rights inspection of the Dominican Republic in contrast to the writings of Dominican women to showcase the limitations of hemispheric entities of human rights in the Caribbean. The paper argues that in the absence of public platforms for truth and reconciliation\, the strategic employment of human rights and maternalism on behalf of Dominican women sought to hold the Dominican state accountable for state violence. Through the close reading of personal correspondence and state memoranda\, I examine how varying definitions of human were utilized by Dominican women to extract specific demands from Dominican officials. This presentation also examines the ways conservatism and rising Dominican radicalism influenced the demands women made of the state. Critically\, this paper excavates the central role of Dominican women in hemispheric development of human rights and reconciliation to argue for its inclusions in evaluations of the legacies of the Cold War radicalism in the Caribbean and Latin America.

SUMMARY:AM Seminar: Analysis of Flagellar Gait Changes Across Fluid Viscosities
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Dr. Kelli Gutierrez\, CSU Monterey Bay \nDescription: Many microswimmers propel themselves using flagella\, which are thin\, threadlike filaments that beat in a periodic wavelike motion. The flagellar beat emerges from the coupled interactions between the surrounding fluid and the active and passive responses of the flagellum. Previous studies have observed the qualitative shape of the flagellar waveform and the swimming speed to change with fluid viscosity. We quantify changes in the flagellar waveforms of \textit{Chlamydomonas reinhardtii} in response to changes in fluid viscosity using (i) shape mode analysis and (ii) a full swimmer simulation to analyze how shape changes affect the swimming speed. By decomposing the gait into the time‑independent mean shape and the time‑varying stroke\, we find that the time-independent mean shape changes substantially in response to viscosity\, while the changes in the time-varying stroke are more subtle. \nAbout the speaker: Dr. Gutierrez received her Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from UC Davis. She joined the Department of Mathematics and Statistics Department at Cal State Monterey Bay in 2026. SUMMARY:North Stars of Emancipation: Navigating Movements and Institutions to Change Food Systems
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, Dr. Roman-Alcalá will discuss his new book\, North Stars of Emancipation: California’s Diverse Food and Farming Movements in Times of Racial Reckoning\, based on his 20 years of engaging such movements as both participant and (more recently) researcher. The book addresses how food movements’ racial politics and change-making strategies have shifted over recent decades\, in response to the interventions of activists and allies\, and in relation to the ever-vexing challenge of working across various kinds of difference. \nAntonio will present insights from North Stars\, illuminating the origins of right wing populist political strategies in California’s agrarian history\, dynamics of contemporary movement organizing among ecological farmers\, farmworkers\, Indigenous people\, food justice activists\, nonprofit staff\, researchers\, and others\, and suggestions for how to both diversify and strengthen the movement. \nAddressing social scientific and social movement debates about if and how social movements should seek radical change to society\, and how movements might navigate problematic political and economic systems not set up to serve them\, the talk will introduce the book’s call for a “North Star” approach to political change. Such an approach\, Antonio argues\, can leverage food markets and state policy even while seeking a food system (and world) beyond capitalism and the colonial nation-state.

DESCRIPTION:The Institute of the Arts and Sciences invites you to a screening of three short films by Patrícia Freitas about women and incarceration in Brazil\, followed by a conversation with the filmmaker. \nFleeing Firminas features moments of women inside the Women’s Penal Complex of Salvador in Bahia\, Brazil participating in the creative writing workshops . \nFleeing Roquelina follows writer Dona Roquelina’s release from prison. \nRioters is an in-production feature-length documentary that begins in the Lemos de Brito Penitentiary in Salvador and tells the stories of Black women from the post-abolition era in old Bahia to the present day; women who dared and continue to dare to occupy spaces that\, though still hostile to them today\, allow their art\, knowledge\, and ancestral power to resonate. \nPatrícia Freitas\, documentary filmmaker\, holds a master’s degree in literature and culture from the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA)\, and is an associate researcher at PAVIC—Researchers in Audiovisual Media\, Iconography\, and Content. In over two decades of work\, she has directed documentaries such as Ira (2004) on religious racism\, which received an honorable mention at Cinesul (2005) and the Ibero-American Film and Video Festival (2005) and was screened at the Ethnographic Film Festival (2005)\, Negros em Movimento (2005)\, about Black theater in Bahia and Rio de Janeiro; and Enquanto te espero\, a luz coalhou (2018)\, a poetic documentary screened at the Arqfilm Festival in Santiago\, Chile\, and Puebla\, Mexico\, among others. In recent years\, she has worked as an assistant director on the series Enredos da liberdade (dir. Luis Carlos de Alencar)\, currently streaming on Globoplay\, and as a researcher for the series Histórias submersas (dir. Paulo Alcântara) and Todos os sonhos (dir. Sofia Federico)\, both aired on TVE Bahia\, among others. She also served as an assistant to Joel Zito Araújo and Hermano Penna\, leading figures in Brazilian cinema.

DESCRIPTION:Congressional elections are central to American democratic representation. Their importance underpins recent concerns about partisan gerrymandering in the states and makes civic participation even more critical given the narrow majorities in Congress. Indeed\, the outcome of congressional elections has significant consequences for whose voices are reflected in state and federal policymaking\, especially when both parties have used redistricting strategically to improve their electoral prospects. In advance of the 2026 midterm elections\, this event will contextualize past redistricting efforts and explore some of the most pressing threats to today’s electoral process. Our panel will discuss the long history of redistricting in the United States\, differentiate between racial gerrymandering and partisan gerrymandering\, discuss the intersection of race and partisan objectives\, highlight the role of recent state independent redistricting commissions and California’s Prop 50\, along with exclusionary changes to the Voting Rights Act and recent actions taken by the Supreme Court. A UC Santa Cruz email address is required to access the recording. \nHost: Stacy Philpott \nSpeaker: Paolina Hwae Kyung Kao Yook Lu\, UC Davis \nTitle: Edible Insects and the Future of Food: Capitalist Dreams\, Loss\, and Everyday Immigrant Practices \nAbstract: In the 2010s\, edible insects emerged in popular discourse as a potential “food of the future.” Drawing on fieldwork and interviews conducted in the United States from 2019-2024 with entrepreneurs\, farmers\, and food producers\, this talk traces how insects became a hopeful response to anxieties about ecological crisis\, food security\, and changing ways of life. I bring one Southeast Asian American family’s enduring practice of foraging for grasshoppers into conversation with the emergence and transformation of the insect agriculture industry. Doing so reveals two distinct relationships to insects: one shaped by the anticipation of future loss and the desire to secure against it\, the other by losses already lived through displacement and relocation. Attending to these differences while listening for what they share\, the talk asks what an affective throughline of loss can reveal about the ways people imagine futures\, develop relationships with other forms of life\, and work to make and sustain lives through food. \n

SUMMARY:AM Seminar: Sliced Optimal Transport: From Acceleration to Bayesian Modeling
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Enter the speaker’s name\, title\, and institution at the top of the event \nDescription: Optimal transport (OT) provides a principled way to match\, compare\, and interpolate distributions\, but its computational cost limits its use at realistic scales. I will present our recent work on reducing that cost and on using OT for statistical modeling and inference. In the first part of the talk\, I will briefly introduce optimal transport and sliced optimal transport (SOT). I will then present sliced-regularized OT\, which uses a cheap sliced plan as an informative prior for approximating the full plan\, yielding an efficient approximate OT solver. In the second part\, I will show how SOT enables new applications in statistical inference. In particular\, I will introduce distributional determinantal point processes\, which use SOT geometry to place repulsive priors on distributions\, giving a Bayesian model for clustering distributional data. Applications include image processing and the clustering of single-cell and epilepsy data. \nAbout the speaker: Dr. Khai Nguyen is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Statistics and Data Science at Texas A&M University. He received his Ph.D. in Statistics from the University of Texas at Austin and his B.Sc. in Computer Science from Hanoi University of Science and Technology. His research develops computational optimal transport\, particularly sliced methods that make large-scale transport tractable. He brings these tools to problems in machine learning and geometric data processing\, as well as to Bayesian approximate inference and nonparametric models for distributional data. \nThis seminar is hosted by Professor Yunyi Shen.

SUMMARY:Fall Slow Seminar: The Range of the River by Iftekhar Iqbal
DESCRIPTION:UCSC’s Center for Southeast Asian Coastal Interactions (SEACoast)  and the  Center for South Asian Studies  invite you to join us for a Slow Seminar to discuss Iftekhar Iqbal’s   The Range of the River: Asia’s Great River Systems and the Making of a Transregional World  on  Monday\, November 16\, 2026 from 3:30-5:00pm PST in Room 210\, Humanities 1. \nSpanning nearly four million square kilometers across eastern South Asia\, mainland Southeast Asia\, and southern China\, the Tibetan river system connects some of Asia’s major waterways\, including the Brahmaputra\, Mekong\, and Yangtze. In The Range of the River\, Iqbal traces the intertwined histories of these rivers and the human and other-than-human forces that have shaped them. The book considers rivers not only as sites of imperial power\, territorial contestation\, and economic activity\, but also as dynamic forces and shared commons that have facilitated movement\, exchange\, commerce\, and cultural encounters across political and geographic boundaries. \nProfessor Anna Tsing (UCSC Anthropology) will facilitate our Slow Seminar to focus on three river systems explored in Iqbal’s book: the Brahmaputra\, Mekong\, and Yangtze. Three scholars including Sanjay Barbora (UCSC Sociology)\, David Biggs (UCR History)\, and Ben Read (UCSC Politics) will offer brief reflections on one river each\, providing distinct disciplinary and regional perspectives before the discussion opens to a broader collective conversation. Our seminar conversation will focus on Chapters 1\, 4\, 6\, and 7 of the book. \nPlease register for the Slow Seminar by filling out this Google Form. A UC Santa Cruz email address is required to access the recording. \nHost: Karen Holl \nSpeaker: Christina Blebea\, UC Santa Cruz\, ENVS \nAbstract: Neotropical forests are biodiversity hotspots\, providing habitat for a diverse suite of species and important ecosystem services for people. However\, many forests are disappearing or are repeatedly recleared\, underscoring the need to identify the social and biological characteristics that influence whether forests persist and recover. My dissertation examines how tropical forest restoration affects ant communities and the ecosystem processes they support\, as well as local-level collective actions that lead to forest permanence. First\, I sampled ant communities from different forest restoration methodologies in a twenty-year-old restoration experiment in Costa Rica\, comparing functional traits to reveal how restoration shapes ant function. I also experimentally tested seed dispersal by ants to determine how restoration impacts ant disperser communities\, which have lasting effects on plant spatial diversity. Finally\, I conducted semi-structured interviews in rural Salvadoran communities with sustained forest permanence to ask about their perceptions of the forest over the past 50 years. Overall\, I found that restoration shapes which ant species are present\, which can affect the ecosystem processes\, informing restoration strategy. I also found that community organizing and community institutions can be fundamental to forest permanence\, highlighting how reforestation initiatives need to take into account local history and agency.  \n
