DESCRIPTION:SPAM New Media Festival launches it’s California edition of their annual festival with performances by interdisciplinary artist Jean Carla Rodea\, collaborative duo Abram Stern & Dorothy R. Santos\, and new Santa Cruz-based project EPOCH. \nJean Carla Rodea \n\n\nJean Carla Rodea is an interdisciplinary artist with a research-based practice\, originally from Mexico City and currently based between San Francisco\, CA\, and Brooklyn\, NY. Their work spans music\, sound\, vocality\, performance\, poetry\, photography\, video\, and sculpture\, moving fluidly between solo projects and collaborative\, cross-disciplinary environments. They draw from shifting identities\, immigration\, ritual\, performance\, ecology\, construction work\, and improvisation\, engaging deeply with time-based media and the diverse spaces where these interactions take place. A central focus of their practice is the exploration of critical socio-political issues\, including the politics of the body\, gender\, memory\, and imbalanced human relationships. They are particularly invested in how time is constructed through memory\, and how those memories—whether embodied or embedded within spaces—are recorded\, fragmented\, and continually reconstructed. This investigation opens pathways for fiction and speculative dimensions to disrupt and challenge dominant narratives. Archival research is a recurring methodology in their work\, encompassing both institutional and personal archives. From these materials\, they craft speculative histories\, responding to documents\, physical traces\, and spaces. In their engagement with the archive\, they embody multiple performative roles: witness\, observer\, participant\, and researcher\, each inhabiting the temporary sites where events unfold. \nDorothy R. Santos\, Ph. D.\nDorothy R. Santos\, Ph. D. (she/they) is a Filipino-American writer\, artist\, and media scholar. She earned her Ph.D. in Film and Digital Media with a designated emphasis in Computational Media from the University of California\, Santa Cruz. She is an Assistant Professor of Teaching focused on Art\, Justice\, and Digital Media in the Art Department and Core Faculty for the Creative Technologies program at the University of California\, Santa Cruz. \n\n\nAbram Stern\nAbram Stern\, MFA. Ph.D.\, (they/he) is an artist and scholar whose work builds upon collections of government-produced media and metadata. They interrogate the material produced by public bureaucracies and the infrastructures that mediate our experiences of them. Their artwork has been exhibited at / (Slash)\, the Institute of Contemporary Art at Maine College of Art and Design\, Real Art Ways\, the Beall Center for Arts and Technology\, Works|San Jose\, and New Langton Arts. Abram served as an education fellow for the Visualizing Abolition initiative at the Institute of Arts and Sciences at UC Santa Cruz\, a public humanities fellow for The Humanities Institute\, and a research fellow for the CITRIS Data and Democracy Institute. Their work has been published in Media-N: Journal of the New Media Caucus and Information Polity. Abram’s projects and collaborations have been supported by funding from the Sunlight Foundation\, the Knight Foundation\, the National Science Foundation\, the Mozilla Foundation\, and the University of California Humanities Research Institute. They hold a Ph.D. in Film and Digital Media from the University of California\, Santa Cruz\, a Master’s in Fine Art of Digital Art and New Media\, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Digital Media from the San Francisco Art Institute.\n\nEPOCH\nSome say EPOCH was born from a recording that should not have survived. Others say EPOCH has always existed\, that before there was an archive\, there was EPOCH.\n\nEPOCH is a composer of temporal fragments\, emerging from the space between one moment and the next. DESCRIPTION:Sitar maestro Nishat Khan returns to UC Santa Cruz with tabla maestro Nitin Mitta in an Indian classical music concert. \nRegarded as one of the most influential musicians of his generation for his unique and inspiring work\, Khan’s masterful collaborations truly connect music globally. With the strike of a single\, unmistakable note\, the sound of Khan’s sitar instantly captivates and transforms one’s mood. Listeners are transported to another realm by a sight and sound unlike any other. As a torchbearer of the most recorded musical family in the world\, the Imdad Khani Gharana\, seven generations of wisdom reside in his fingertips. While grounded in centuries of tradition\, Khan forges his own signature sound with a refreshing twist: familiar yet challenging\, unfolding with emotional contrasts and surprises at every turn. \nTouring and performing throughout the world since age 13\, Nishat Khan’s unique cosmopolitan perspective has inspired a great sensitivity and connection to the cultures of music of the world. He gave his first public concert at age 7\, and was the youngest performer on an All India Radio national programme at age 15. In more recent years\, Khan created history in summer 2025 by composing and creating the first ever traditional (Western) opera from the Indian subcontinent\, the Taj Mahal Opera. The opera had its premiere at the Grange Park Opera in the UK to sold-out performances and wide critical acclaim. His recent performances in 2026 include a sold-out concert at the Freight in Berkeley\, California. \n\nThe press calls Khan: “Profound and electrifying…pure exhilaration\, taking tradition as a blueprint for ecstasy” (The New York Times); “Etherial\, compelling\, sensual\, Nishat Khan master of the sitar” (Los Angeles Times); “Freewheeling virtuosity inflected with infinite imaginative variety” (BBC Proms\, The Guardian); and “Ferociously gifted…no conceivable limitations…his sitar roars\, cries\, and exults” (Times of India). \n\nNitin Mitta is regarded as one of the most sought after tabla players in the music world and has quickly established a reputation as an artist with a rare combination of technical virtuosity\, spontaneity\, clarity of tone\, and sensitivity to melodic nuance. He is an acclaimed accompanist who has performed with some of India’s most celebrated musicians including Pandit Jasraj\, Pandits Rajan and Sajan Mishra\, Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt\, Ustad Nishat Khan\, Ustad Shahid Parvez and Pandit Nayan Ghosh. DESCRIPTION:SPAM New Media Festival continues with performances by electronic percussionist Sunken Cages\, collaborative duo Rohan Chander & Scott Li\, and artist / instrument builder Ava Koohbor. \n\nAbout the Artists\nSunken Cages is the project of Indian-born drummer/electronic music producer Ravish Momin. He has studied with US Jazz master-drummer Andrew Cyrille and has worked as a sideman with a wide array of musicians including US Jazz legend Kalaparush Maurice McIntyre (AACM/Chicago) and pop-star Shakira. In the past\, he led Tarana\, a shapeshifting global-Jazz group\, on international and domestic stages for 14 years. His current collaborative projects include ‘Turning Jewels Into Water’ (with Haitian electronic music pioneer Val Jeanty)\, a duo with dragonchild (Ethio-American saxophonist DA Mekonnen) and a trio with dancer Ishita Mili and video-artist Art Jones. He has recently produced tracks with South African Gqom group Phelimuncasi (Nyege Nyege Records)\, Saxophonist Maria Valencia (Meridian Brothers)\, producers Makossiri (Hakuna Kulala\, Kenya)\, Saskia (QTV\, Brazil)\, Kush Arora (Discrepant\, US)\, Baba Sy (Jokkoo Collective\, Spain/Senegal) and Rani Jambak (Indonesia\, Yes No Wave.)\n\nRohan Chander is a media artist\, electronic musician\, and performance artist with an interest in recombinatory approaches to sound and aesthetic. Rooted in political and personal inquiry\, he often draws from sample-based artforms\, performance art\, speculative fiction\, and historical research. His work has been described as “hypersensory” (Washington Post)\, “remarkably alive” (The Wire Magazine)\, and of “transcendent metamorphosis” (I Care If You Listen). Under his solo DIY project BAKUDI SCREAM\, I won the Gaudeamus Prize for Music Composition in 2022.\n\n\nScott Li is a NYC-based violinist\, composer\, producer\, improviser\, filmmaker\, and electroacoustic sound artist blending the Romantic classical chamber music tradition with deeply emotive\, boundary-pushing electronic music. Li‘s music is first and foremost epistolary—love letters to the world and the people around us\, the memories we share\, and the feelings we carry with us. Hailed by The Crossfader as “one of the pioneers of the next generation’s classical music”\, Li’s work fuses visceral string playing\, modular synthesis\, live processing\, fixed media\, film\, photography\, dance\, and poetry with a classical chamber music sensibility to “create a simultaneous understanding of The Beautiful and The Sublime\, while exhibiting unparalleled emotional induction.” (The Crossfader\, 2019) Half of the newly formed “Warp Duo” with electroacoustic improviser Levi Lu\, Li is an explorer of haunting and ethereal sounds and a collaborator of a diverse group of musicians\, filmmakers\, visual artists\, poets\, and dancers\, with work ranging from modern pop production to full-blown experimental noise music. Collaborations have included works premiered at New World Symphony’s BLUE Project series in 2022\, The University of Michigan’s Dance Department alongside Vim Vigor Dance\, as well as a commission from Pathos Percussion Trio. Li has performed at numerous renowned stages across the country\, including the Park Avenue Armory\, Big Ears\, New World Symphony Center in Miami\, REDCAT\, Dripping\, the Jazz Gallery in NYC\, Rhizome DC and internationally at A L’ARME! Festival and Cologne Jazz Fest\, supporting bassoonist and composer Joy Guidry. Li currently works at the Juilliard School as a full-time recording engineer.\n\n\nAva Koohbor works between sculpture and instrument\, poetry and circuitry\, memory and electronics\, Tehran and San Francisco. Her practice explores sound as a field of relations\, where listening\, making\, and material continually reorganize one another. Her work takes shape through instruments\, performances\, installations\, exhibitions\, and books. SUMMARY:2026 Harvest Festival
DESCRIPTION:Connect with community on the campus farm at the annual Harvest Festival! Harvest Fest will have activities for all ages including face painting\, flower pressing\, pumpkin painting\, cider pressing\, tractor rides\, live music\, and more! Plus\, enjoy food and treats from local food trucks\, participate in an apple pie bake-off (more info coming soon)\, connect with local organizations\, and enjoy the campus farm. Full list of activities coming soon.\nCost: $5 for general public; free entry for current students of UCSC\, Hartnell and Cabrillo College\, Friends of the UCSC Farm & Garden members\, and children under 12. Cash preferred at the entrance gate. \nTransportation and parking: We encourage carpooling\, walking\, biking\, or taking the bus if you are able to! Parking info coming soon. \nLogistics: Please do not harvest any of the crops on the farm during your visit. The crops grown on the farm feed students in need and support our research and programming. We encourage you to bring a reusable water bottle to save plastic and stay hydrated! Pets are not allowed on the UC Santa Cruz campus (with the exception of service animals). The Harvest Festival is presented by the UC Santa Cruz Center for Agroecology\, the Food Systems Working Group\, Measure 43 and Life Lab. \nThe UCSC Farm has hilly and uneven terrain with gravel\, dirt\, and mulched paths. We strive to make our events as accessible as possible. If you require an accommodation or service to fully participate\, please email agroecology@ucsc.edu and we will do our best to accommodate. SUMMARY:Performing Anarchive
DESCRIPTION:Through motion capture\, immersive sound\, and real-time digital systems\, CHARI performs alongside Harriet\, a life-scale avatar carrying a living archive of Black cultural memory. Together\, they move through fragments of sound\, image\, and memory\, shaping the world around them as the performance unfolds. Performing Anarchive brings body and technology together in a live exploration of memory\, movement\, and possibility. \nAbout the Artist: \nCHARI (Dr. Chari Smith\, Film and Digital Media) is an NY Emmy-nominated composer\, interdisciplinary artist\, humanities scholar\, and new media archivist. Their practice explores alternative archival methods through and with a Black lens\, building immersive worlds through sound\, installation\, and performance while critically engaging technology as subject\, tool\, collaborator\, and adversary.
