SUMMARY:Carlos Motta: When Time Stands Still
DESCRIPTION:Carlos Motta’s When Time Stands Still\, the artist’s second solo show with the IAS\, features new and recent installations\, videos\, and sculptures highlighting the artist’s preoccupation with the historical and aesthetic productions of difference and marginalization that shape the present. \nThe selection of artworks in the exhibition explore the unsettling experience of living in a time that seems violently stuck on repeat. Archetypal figures from art history (a fool\, a siren\, a witness\, a victim) reappear in the current moment as containers of time\, bringing the past of imperialism\, colonization\, and displacement into a present marked by the rise of anti-immigration politics\, climate injustice\, and other forms of disposability. Some works challenge this violent repetition of time. The clock moves\, if gruelingly\, in an endurance-based video performance\, No One\, 2025. For forty-six minutes\, the artist undertakes to keep his eyes open\, witnessing\, withstanding\, confronting\, and resisting the bombardment of images\, both historical and otherwise\, that normalize harm. In another video work\, Gravity\, 2024\, performers enact rescue carries\, supporting each other until they can’t bear the weight. Together\, the artworks act as a proposal about how to rethink time—how to slow time—with a poetic and aesthetic cadence that might counter the numbing reverberations of living in the present. \nWhen Time Stands Still is organized as part of Visualizing Abolition\, an arts-based initiative that reaches across prison borders to create a future free of prisons. \n\n\n\nCarlos Motta (b. 1978\, Colombia) is a multidisciplinary artist whose work has been shown widely nationally and internationally. Solo exhibitions venues include the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona; Nikolaj Kunsthal\, Copenhagen; Museo de Arte Moderno de Bogotá; Wexner Center for the Arts\, Columbus\, OH ; Röda Sten Konsthall\, Gothenburg\, Sweden; Galeria Vermelho\, São Paulo; Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM); Tate Modern\, London; and New Museum\, New York (2012). He has also participated in major biennials\, including the Venice Biennale; Berlin Biennale; Bienal de São Paulo; and the Gwangju Biennale. Motta is Associate Professor of Interdisciplinary Art\, Fine Arts Department\, Pratt Institute\, Brooklyn.

SUMMARY:Victor ‘Marka27’ Quiñonez: Ni de Aquí\, Ni de Allá
DESCRIPTION:Organized in partnership with the Center for Art and Advocacy\, located in Brooklyn\, New York\, Ni de Aquí\, Ni de Allá (Not From Here\, Not From There) by multidisciplinary artist Victor ‘Marka27’ Quiñonez features a wide range of artworks  that issue a bold declaration of dual belonging\, including altars\, an elaborately immersive botanica\, paintings referencing visual symbolism drawn from textiles\, graffiti and community traditions\, and\, in a series called I.C.E. Scream\, large\, brightly colored resin sculptures in the shape of melting Mexican paletas (popsicles). As the exhibition title suggests (a phrase widely used in bilingual and bicultural communities)\, these artworks reflect the artist’s interest in the experience of living between worlds even as violent notions of nationalism and identity pervade.  \nAccompanying the exhibition\, Elevar la Cultura\, an immersive sculptural installation featuring a twenty-two-foot-tall pyramid built from ice coolers adorned with ancestral textiles\, sacred symbols\, and mural work will be on view at Santa Cruz Barrios Unidos (1817 Soquel) November 7\, 2026- March 7\, 2027. As Quiñonez explains\, this sculpture epitomizes the contradictions of living—and laboring—as an immigrant in the United States:  \n “Most people see the cooler as a tool for leisure…for barbecues\, tailgating\, and celebrations. But for immigrant communities\, the cooler is a tool and symbol for opportunity and independence. In every major city\, you see families and vendors selling fruit\, food\, and water out of these coolers on the streets and in subway stations. They’re a necessity for survival and a way to start an honest living\,” the artist shares. \nThe Institute of Arts and Sciences will be the second venue to successfully present Ni de Aquí\, Ni de Allá to the public. SUMMARY:Skate for Change: Norma Ibarra's Photography and Indigenous Skateboarding as Decolonial Praxis: A Brown Bag with Miguel Fernandez
DESCRIPTION:Norma Ibarra\, born in Hermosillo\, Sonora\, Mexico\, photographs underrepresented and marginalized skateboarders such as female-identifying skaters across Mexico for her photobook Para Ti (2021)\, and self-fashioned Indigenous skaters for the Museum of Vancouver 2021-22 exhibition\, Skate for Change. This presentation focuses on the latter\, articulating how Ibarra’s collaboration with her participants circulate the decolonial potential of Indigenous skateboarding. Grinding down handrails\, launching over benches\, skateboarding is a cultural practice that actively challenges the settler-colonial regimes of property and ‘proper’ use of space\, inspiring new ways of imagining the infrastructure that corrals us. Ibarra’s photography plays a crucial role in these possibilities\, yet is complicated by photography’s settler-colonial legacy of subjugation\, especially towards Indigenous communities across Turtle Island. This presentation explores these tensions and complications\, revealing possibilities towards a decolonial praxis. \n  \nMiguel Fernandez is a Ph.D. Student in the History of Art/Visual Culture Department at UC-Santa Cruz and a Lionel Cantú Memorial Awardee (2025).

First organized by Boston University Art Galleries and curated by Kate Fowle in September of 2025\, the exhibition debuted to critical acclaim before gaining national attention after its abrupt removal from its second venue\, the University of North Texas\, where it had been installed just one week prior to it being censored.  \nVictor ‘Marka27’ Quiñonez is a renowned international visual artist who is known for his diverse works that intersect contemporary art\, graffiti\, vinyl toys\, fashion and design and art activism. SUMMARY:Reckoning with Redress: The Legacy of Japanese American Incarceration
DESCRIPTION:Forty-five years ago\, survivors and descendants of the WWII Japanese American incarceration\, testified before the Commission on Wartime Relocation and Internment of Civilians (CWRIC)\, helping set in motion what would become one of the largest reparations efforts in U.S. history. This year’s Peggy Downes Baskin Ethics lecture marks that anniversary with the launch and premiere of Reckoning with Redress (RWR) — a new cinematic digital history project\, along with the lecture “A Debt Owed–Korematsu\, Reparations\, and the Ever-Recycling Racial Pathology of 1619\,” given by Donald Tamaki. Produced by Full Spectrum Features Education\, in partnership with Humanities Dean Jasmine Alinder\, RWR is an Open Educational Resource\, which includes a film (Enough)\, an immersive game\, and an interactive learning website\, that explores the history and legacies of the Japanese American Redress Movement. \nJoin us to learn more about this important moment in history and explore these valuable learning resources. \n \nDoors will open for light refreshments at 5:30pm. Program begins at 6:00pm. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Seating is first come\, first served. \nParking Information \nThe Cultural Center Merrill College is located in Merrill College\, in the northeast corner of the campus core. Those walking or arriving by Metro bus or campus shuttle can take the steep path heading northeast from the Crown/Merrill bus stop. \nFor those driving from the Main Entrance\, stay on Coolidge Drive. Shortly after Coolidge turns left and becomes McLaughlin Drive\, turn right at the sign for Merrill College. At the top of the hill\, veer right. There is parking for “A\,” “B\,” and “C” permits along the right. Parking is provided free of charge courtesy of the Humanities Division. There are two accessible parking spaces if you turn left at the top of the hill and two more if you turn right. Parking attendants will be on site to issue parking permits to event attendees. \nDonald Tamaki is a Senior Counsel at the San Francisco law firm of Minami Tamaki LLP having received his BA and JD from U.C. Berkeley. \nIn the 1980’s\, Tamaki served on the pro bono legal team that reopened the 1944 Supreme Court case of Fred Korematsu\, a notorious precedent that validated forcing 125\,000 Japanese Americans into concentration camps on the claim they were spies. But almost 40 years later\, secret intelligence reports and Justice Department memos surfaced\, categorically denying that Japanese Americans were spying\, admitting there was no reason for the mass removal\, and calling the Army’s claims “intentional falsehoods.” Despite whistle-blower protests from government lawyers urging that they had a duty not to lie to the Court\, the Solicitor General stood by the Army’s claims knowing they were fabricated. The evidence was suppressed\, and much of it ordered burned. On the basis that a fraud had been committed\, Korematsu’s criminal conviction was erased. The ruling boosted the call for reparations to redress this great wrong. \nIn 2021\, California Governor Gavin Newsom appointed Tamaki to serve on the nine-member California Reparations Task Force (the Task Force) that produced the groundbreaking Final Report comprehensively documenting the cumulative impact of 246 years of enslavement\, another 100 years of Jim Crow oppression\, and decades more of segregation\, and to recommend to the Legislature what California should do to address the resulting compounding and cascading harms. \nTamaki is part of the leadership team of the Alliance for Reparations\, Reconciliation\, and Truth (ARRT)\, a multi-racial statewide coalition working to promote public awareness of the harms wrought by racial subjugation\, and to transform the Task Force’s 115 recommendations into legislation. \nHis awards include the ABA Spirit of Excellence Award (2020)\, the National Asian Pacific Bar Association Trailblazer Award (2003)\, and the State Bar of California Loren Miller Award (1987). \n\nThe Peggy Downes Baskin Ethics Lecture Series is a lively forum for the discussion and exploration of ethics-related challenges in human endeavors. The Ethics Lecture is made possible by the Peggy Downes Baskin Humanities Endowment for Interdisciplinary Ethics which enables the Humanities Division to promote a dialogue about ethics and ethics related challenges in an interdisciplinary setting. The endowment was established in honor of Peggy Downes Baskin’s longtime interest in ethical issues across the academic spectrum. \n\nThis event is open to all students\, faculty\, staff\, and members of the public consistent with University policy and state and federal law.
