SUMMARY:Something held by poetry
DESCRIPTION:In this intimate workshop\, UC Santa Cruz students\, faculty\, and staff are invited into conversation with poets Ronaldo V. Wilson and Terri Witek. Something held by poetry is programmed for Wilson’s multimedia exhibition\, there are no words\, but melodies\, currently on view at the IAS. \nRSVP is required. \n\n\nRonaldo V. Wilson is a poet\, interdisciplinary artist\, academic\, and the author of Narrative of the Life of the Brown Boy and the White Man\, winner of the Cave Canem Prize; Poems of the Black Object\, winner of the Thom Gunn Award for Gay Poetry and the Asian American Literary Award in Poetry; Farther Traveler: Poetry\, Prose\, Other\, and Lucy 72. His latest books are Carmelina: Figures and Virgil Kills: Stories. He is the editor of three special issues of hybrid and experimental work in Interim: A Journal of Poetry and Poetics; and Obsidian: Literature & Arts in the African Diaspora. Wilson is Professor of Creative Writing and Literature at U.C. Santa Cruz\, where he directs the Creative Writing Program\, and serves on the core faculty of the Creative Critical PhD Program; principal faculty member of CRES (Critical Race and Ethnic Studies); and affiliate faculty member of DANM (Digital Arts and New Media). \n\n\n\n\nTerri Witek’s most recent books include her 2026 eco-poetics collection with Amaranth Borsuk\, W/\ SH\, which loops two rain prophets\, both women\, into a crisis between future worlds\, and 2023’s Something’s Missing in This Museum (Anhinga Press). A translation by Dona Mayoora of 2018’s The Rape Kit into Malayalam is forthcoming. Her work has been included in many anthologies\, including 2 from 2021: JUDITH: Women Making Visual Poetry (Timglaset Editions ) and the WAAVe Global Gallery (Hysterical Books). Witek’s solo and collaborative work has been featured in a wide variety of text venues\, including Fence\, The Colorado Review\, Hampden-Sydney Poetry Review\, American Poetry Review\, Poetry\, Slate\, Hudson Review\, Lana Turner\, The New Republic\, and UTSANGA .

Get the chance to meet recruiters from many industries/firms seeking to fill internship\, full-time\, and part-time roles. Come take essential steps toward laying the foundation for your future career and potentially even land an interview! \nCurious about how to best prepare for the fair? \n1. Research the organization \nIdentify the top 3-5 companies you are interested in\, but remember to be open to different companies you may not have heard of because they may be a startup or business-to-business organization that doesn’t directly serve consumers. \nDo your research by reviewing company websites. Look for their mission\, values\, location\, and the type of available opportunities (e.g.\, internships\, full-time positions\, etc.). Company representatives are impressed by potential candidates who take the time to do this! \n2. Prepare your introduction and questions \nReflect on what it is about each company that resonates with you. Perhaps it’s the specific technology they’re developing\, the research they’re leading\, or the world problem they’re trying to solve. What relevant experiences do you have? How can you be of service to that organization? Exercise critical thinking skills to develop questions to ask recruiters and hiring managers. \n3. Dress with confidence \nEach industry and each company has different work attire expectations and organizational culture. All attendees will enter a raffle for a Humanities tumbler\, and pizza will be provided for those joining in person! \nRegister on Handshake here \nLearn more about Kim: \nKim Angulo (she/her) graduated from UCSC in 2013 with her BA in Feminist Studies. She worked in the California State Capitol on public policy and politics for three years\, focusing on courts\, criminal justice\, and human services. Kim attended UC Davis Law School from 2016 to 2019\, gaining experience in Public Defense\, Workers’ Rights\, and Civil Rights. Kim has been an Assistant Public Defender representing people who cannot afford to hire an attorney for six years. She has represented hundreds of clients facing criminal charges and conducted misdemeanor and felony jury trials. She currently works in Mental Health Diversion.

DESCRIPTION:Are you curious about careers in education or nonprofits? Join this job talk with UCSC Humanities alum Kristen Amicone\, a doctoral student with expertise in nonprofits\, educational programming\, and leadership. Kristen will share insights from her academic and professional experience\, from being a transfer student\, to making career transition decisions\, to navigating an online graduate school program. \nLearn more about Kristen: \nKristen Amicone is a UCSC Feminist Studies and Kresge alumna and a lifelong Californian. Growing up in the Inland Empire\, she moved to Santa Cruz to attend UCSC and then to San Diego for her first stint in grad school at SDSU. After working in the nonprofit sector for 15 years\, she made the jump to education/government work with the San Diego County Office of Education. Kristen specializes in employee/volunteer engagement and educational programming. She returned to school in 2022\, earning her MSNPA from Louisiana State University\, Shreveport (LSUS) in 2023 before applying for and getting accepted to the EdD program at the same institution. Her research interests include employee engagement\, change confidence\, and leadership. She lives in La Mesa\, a small town right outside San Diego\, and enjoys theatre\, movies\, and horror novels.

SUMMARY:Orientation to Community Archiving
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the importance of preserving and documenting the history and culture of our community through archiving. \nWe will discuss how the rise of interest in Community Archives has transformed the way collective memories are curated\, capturing forgotten and suppressed voices\, reshaping our understanding of what archives are and how they function\, and challenging long-held assumptions about the role of professionals in mediating and sharing history. \nThe presenter\, Rebecca Hernandez\, is currently the inaugural Community Archivist at the UC Santa Cruz University Library\, where she collaborates with community members to preserve the rich history and cultural heritage of Santa Cruz County. Her academic background includes a PhD in American Studies\, MA in American Indian Studies\, and an MFA in Design. \nThis is a hybrid event\, with some space available in Humanities 2-259\, and a virtual option available.
