Think of telomeres like the plastic caps on shoelaces that keep them from fraying. She also discovered telomerase\, the enzyme that rebuilds these caps as our cells divide. SUMMARY:Stanley Flatté Memorial Lecture: Chaos\, black holes\, and quantum mechanics
DESCRIPTION:CHAOS\, BLACK HOLES\, AND QUANTUM MECHANICS \nThe world is a chaotic place. Even if we know the rules of nature\, we often find it difficult to predict the future – forecasting the weather is a notorious example. Recently\, we have understood that chaos plays a central role in the behavior of black holes\, some of the most striking objects in our universe. We will describe these developments and indicate some new insights they have led to in our quest to unify quantum mechanics and the theory of gravity. \nAbout the speaker: Stephen Shenker has been on the faculty of the University of Chicago and Rutgers University\, and is currently the Richard Herschel Weiland Professor at Stanford University. He is a theoretical physicist who has worked on problems ranging from the theory of phase transitions to the nonperturbative formulation of quantum gravity. He is a recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship\, the Onsager Prize and the Dirac Medal\, and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences. DESCRIPTION:Beautiful Universe is a pop-up exhibit in collaboration with the UC Santa Cruz Department of Astronomy & Astrophysics that will be on display at the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History from May 21 to 31.\nIn over more than 20 photos\, you will see galaxies\, novae\, supernovae\, reflection and emission nebulae\, and interstellar dust clouds that give birth to new stars and planets. They are artistic images filled with scientific information. The astrophotography exhibit bridges the gap that often exists in our minds between art and science. \nAsk an astronomer! Her first book\, Crowned\, published in 2019 by Bay Company Books\, is a widely respected expression of the complexity of compounded identities\, reflecting on mental health\, race\, teen parenting\, womanhood\, ministry\, and so much more. DESCRIPTION:When two quite different disciplines make eerily similar predictions about the future of the planet and human societies\, they deserve notice. Climate scientists warn that we may be heading toward a Hothouse Earth “inhospitable to … human societies\,” with “increasingly catastrophic impacts” possibly “worldwide societal breakdown.”       Finance and actuarial science emphasize the importance of tail risk (rare adverse events).  Planning and preparing for them is essential to the survival of insurance companies\, pension funds\, banks\, and the entire financial system.   In Climate Salon 6\, Economist Dan Friedman and Environmental Sociologist Andy Szasz team up to show how these disciplinary perspectives interconnect and what they say about the path forward. \nTues Apr 28 3:30-5 pm\, Center for Adaptive Optics Atrium or via zoom (free and open to the public!) \nDan Friedman is Distinguished Professor of Economics Emeritus at UCSC. But cancer cells almost always develop drug resistance\, causing treatments to fail and limiting patient survival. An often-overlooked aspect of cancer genes is the messenger RNA\, which is copied from DNA\, then translated into protein to do the work of the cell. Over 95% of human genes have isoforms\, which are different versions of the RNA message created through a process called RNA splicing. Laurie Palmer\, in collaboration with Cid Pearlman and Ilia Dolgov to practice moving together as a body of water\, walking west from the Institute of the Arts and Sciences\, along Delaware Ave.\, to the ocean. On the way\, participants will imagine and explore how this particular stretch of land has been inhabited\, stewarded\, enclosed\, owned\, and used—and how these histories shape contemporary borders between public and private space. DESCRIPTION:Science In the Neighborhood\nA public lecture series hosted quarterly by the UC Santa Cruz Science Division \nThe End Game: Discovering how telomeres cause disease\nPresentation by Carol Greider\, Professor\, UC Santa Cruz\nQ&A with Susan Carpenter\, Professor\, UC Santa Cruz \nTelomeres\, the ends of chromosomes\, play a pivotal role in human disease. Short telomeres cause age-related degenerative disease\, while long telomeres predispose people to cancer. That’s why understanding how telomere length is regulated is so critical. Dr. Greider’s research is uncovering the mechanism of telomere length regulation so that we can devise approaches for disease treatment. By using new DNA-sequencing technology in a novel way\, her team made a surprising discovery: Each chromosome end has a unique telomere-length distribution that is different from other chromosome ends. Dr. Greider will explain how this finding will help us better understand the role of telomeres in disease. \nThe event is in-person only.
