SUMMARY:Seminar Series | What you may not know about groundwater management in California with Ruth Langridge
DESCRIPTION:Host: ENVS Personnel Committee \nGroundwater is a critical source of California’s water supply. Many basins in critical overdraft are now being managed under the 2015 Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA) to support state goals of sustainable and equitable management. However\, court adjudicated basins that encompass over 8\,000 square miles and are home to nearly 11 million people\, over 4 million of whom live in disadvantaged and economically vulnerable communities\, are not managed under SGMA but under court judgments. The groundwater basins in the entire San Gabriel River Watershed and large areas of the Santa Ana Watershed in Southern California are adjudicated. SUMMARY:Seminar Series | Is the Farm a Digital Factory?: Labor\, Leafy Greens\, and the Limits of Automation with Summer Sullivan
DESCRIPTION:Host:Madeleine Fairbairn \nSilicon Valley investors\, entrepreneurs\, and engineers are increasingly interested in agriculture as a site to disrupt and improve upon with their technologies. The nearby Salinas Valley – known as the Salad Bowl of the World – might be considered a “ground zero” for these operations of technological introduction\, with some calling it the Silicon Valley of Agriculture. This exit talk showcases my research on the evolving context in which new technologies are transforming social and environmental relations\, especially for already exploited\, racialized workers in the Salinas Valley. I trace the uneven ways in which agricultural automation is unfolding\, but also its profound limits within the region’s delicate\, leafy farming systems. Through interviews\, focus groups\, participant observation\, and historical analysis\, I will show how the materiality of crops such as lettuce continues to organize labor and limit full automation. With contributions from James Beard Award-winning chefs\, Macarthur genius grant-winning scientists\, and a host of farmers who are leading the way on perennializing agriculture\, the book takes readers on a behind-the-scenes tour of the largest food forest in the United States\, the test plots developing the first commercial perennial grains\, and the vast grasslands where Indigenous communities are returning bison to their prairie homelands. In the process\, each contributor shares their unique story of learning with these long-lived plants about how to root deeper in the face of existential challenges\, speaking directly to readers charting their own path on a rapidly changing planet. SUMMARY:Navigating Coexistence: Mountain Lion Behavior\, Outdoor Recreation\, and the Challenges of Managing Multiuse Landscapes in California’s Santa Cruz Mountains
DESCRIPTION:John Morgan from the UCSC Environmental Studies Department\n\nIn Person Location: ISB 221 \nZoom Link \nAs outdoor recreation grows in popularity\, its effects on wildlife remain poorly understood. This dissertation examines how outdoor recreational activity shapes the behavior of mountain lions (Puma concolor) in California’s Santa Cruz Mountains – a fragmented landscape where large carnivores persist alongside urban and suburban human communities. Using high-resolution GPS data from collared mountain lions\, crowd-sourced human activity data from Strava\, and long-term camera trap surveys\, I investigate the mechanisms and consequences of human-carnivore interactions across multiple ecological and social scales. Specifically\, I ask how outdoor recreation affects mountain lion habitat selection\, movement behavior\, and population abundance; whether behavioral modification strategies can reduce human-carnivore conflict; and how land managers balance the competing goals of recreation access and wildlife conservation. Together\, this work contributes to a mechanistic understanding of recreation ecology and offers evidence-based guidance for managing multiuse landscapes that support both people and wildlife.

Research the organization \nIdentify the top 3-5 companies you are interested in\, but remember to be open to different companies you may not have heard of because they may be a startup or business-to-business organization that doesn’t directly serve consumers. \nDo your research by reviewing company websites. DESCRIPTION:With climate risks growing\, climate action facing political headwinds in many countries\, and international cooperation increasingly challenged\, Lily Hsueh’s Corporations at Climate Crossroads illuminates how and under what conditions the world’s largest corporations have taken proactive action on climate change during the years leading up to and after the Paris Agreement. \nDrawing on insights from economics\, political science\, and management\, the author uncovers how corporations and their leaders are key players in a nested structure of climate change governance. Hsueh shows that corporate leaders’ climate actions are shaped by bottom-up and top-down institutions and incentives involving firm\, regulatory\, and global governance. To navigate uncertainty\, corporate responses to the climate challenge are therefore an interplay of internal firm leadership\, complementary capabilities in adjacent areas\, and strategic and proactive engagement with regulatory process and global governance. Sophisticated large-N statistical analyses of global businesses’ climate mitigation and performance from 2011 to 2020 and illustrative company case studies substantiate the demand for\, and supply of\, global businesses’ climate mitigation\, across sectors\, and in developed and developing countries. \nPlease join us for this book talk in-person at the Interdisciplinary Sciences Building (ISB 102). SUMMARY:Campo-Sano Climate Action Conference
DESCRIPTION:Campo-Sano Climate Action: A Regional Conference on California Farmworkers and the Environment will be co-hosted on October 4th\, 2025\, by the University of California\, Santa Cruz\, and community partners \nThe conference will address the challenges of resilience amid the impacts of climate changes and the many other compounding risks farmworkers face. We will first review lessons learned from developing practical remedies and health promoter training designed to protect farming communities. Next\, we will involve all attendees in deliberating ways to scale up these protective efforts and make them sustainable amid mounting social and political challenges. \nProgram Description \nThe daylong conference will start with a morning session including testimonies of health promoters from local community-based organizations (CBO’s) and UCSC students. The frontline community health workers will describe the challenges they face in trying to protect farmworkers from environmental stressors in a context that is also overshadowed by chronic but intensifying political and economic vulnerabilities. \nA report will also be delivered by faculty on the two-year effort supported by funding from a Californian Climate Action grant to develop the Campo-Sano data app. This app is designed to inform local farm communities on climate related risks from exposures to high temperatures\, flooding\, wildfire air pollution\, groundwater contamination and other risks. We will showcase how this application can be used on mobile phones to support farmworkers who want to report their experience of these risks anonymously to state agencies and legal advocacy groups. \nA keynote luncheon presentation will be followed by a dialogue between representatives of state agencies and local community-based partners. Discussion panels and breakout sessions will engage these CBO’s and state agency officials to explore the extension of workplace protections for farmworkers and further regulation enforcement\, as well as the possible scale-up of Campo-Sano trainings across the state. This dialogue is critical in the face of the federal government’s retreat from protecting agricultural workers\, their employers and the food security they support for our wider community.
