SUMMARY:Exhibit Opening! "Ideas to Postpone the End of the World": Artists Books and Archives towards Landels-Hill Big Creek Reserve
DESCRIPTION:Join us on on Thursday\, June 4th from 2:00–3:00pm for Ideas to Postpone the End of the World: Artists Books and Archives toward Landels-Hill Big Creek Reserve\, a pop-up exhibition curated by MFA student SeeVa Dawne Kitslis! \nJust a sliver of the wonderful artist book collection at Special Collections & Archives at UC Santa Cruz focused on how artists are negotiating their relationship with\, through\, and alongside the natural world. \nThe phrase\, “ideas to postpone the end of the world”\, is Krenak philosopher and writer\, Ailton Krenak’s observation that both creativity and poetry can hold off ‘the sky from falling’ by preserving indigenous ways of life that are more integrated with the natural world. This collection of artist books tries to open up that cavity and showcase the diverse material modalities\, timescales\, and geographies of artists that connect with ecological storytelling. \n“For a long time\, we have been alienated from the organism to which we belong–the earth. So much so that we begin to think of Earth and Humanity as two separate entities. I can’t see anything on Earth that is not Earth. Everything I can think of is a part of nature.” -Ailton Krenak \n

DESCRIPTION:Join us from 4-5pm on 5/28 to toast our new student-curated exhibition about the history of Shakespeare Santa Cruz! \nThe exhibition is now open in McHenry’s 3rd floor hallway. \nThe items in these cases were chosen by four student interns\, working under the direction of Sean Keilen (Professor\, Literature). SUMMARY:Exhibit Opening Event! "Improvising in fields of constraint": How Feminist Studies at UCSC was made\, changed and unmade"
DESCRIPTION:Join us on on May 27th from 4-5pm for the opening of “Improvising in fields of constraint”: How Feminist Studies at UCSC was made\, changed and unmade”! \nAn April 9\, 2026 press release from the U.S. Department of Education\, titled\, “Victories for Higher Education: Ending Gender Extremism and Cutting Underused Programs\,” celebrated the closure of Gender Studies departments in U.S. universities. The closure of UCSC’s Feminist Studies department in July 2025 was listed as an example of the necessary end of an “underused\,” “low-value” and “extremist” program of study that was “incapable of providing workforce-benefiting skills” to students. But for students\, faculty\, and staff\, Feminist Studies was a center of intellectual and political life at UC Santa Cruz. The persistent struggle to make\, define\, change\, and maintain the department over its 50-year history underscores feminisms’ continued significance in the university\, even in a time of departmental closures and other forms of peril for the discipline. \nThis exhibit draws its title from feminist scholar Judith Butler’s evocative phrase in the book\, Undoing Gender\, which describes sexuality as an “improvisational possibility within a field of constraints.” The exhibit tracks the constraints within which UCSC’s Feminist Studies department took shape. \nCurated by Madhavi Murty\, Jess Fournier\, Liliana Mata and Nithya Raghunath \nWe hope to see you then! \n
