SUMMARY:Seminar Series | What you may not know about groundwater management in California with Ruth Langridge
DESCRIPTION:Host: ENVS Personnel Committee \nGroundwater is a critical source of California’s water supply. Many basins in critical overdraft are now being managed under the 2015 Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA) to support state goals of sustainable and equitable management. However\, court adjudicated basins that encompass over 8\,000 square miles and are home to nearly 11 million people\, over 4 million of whom live in disadvantaged and economically vulnerable communities\, are not managed under SGMA but under court judgments. The groundwater basins in the entire San Gabriel River Watershed and large areas of the Santa Ana Watershed in Southern California are adjudicated. We are pleased to welcome May 22 speakers from the Google Maps and Google Geo team: Megan Goddard and W. Kailen Wright. They will present on: \nVectors\, Rasters\, and Robots: Navigating the Shift from Digital Cartography to Spatial AI \nThe speakers will explore the history of digital mapmaking\, with a focus on the pivotal Project Ground Truth and how it helped shape modern tech-based mapping since the early 2000s. They will also discuss the rapid advancement of AI technologies and share firsthand experiences from their work at Google Maps and the broader geospatial industry. \nTime: Friday\, May 22\, 3:00–4:00 PM\, Talk\, Q&A session\, and coffee reception. \nLocation: UC Santa Cruz\, ISB Room 221 \nHosted by: CISR\, GISTAR\, and UCSC Drone and GIS Society \nAbout the Speakers \n \nDr. Megan Goddard is a Google Maps Program Manager with more than 20 years at Google\, where she has witnessed the evolution of digital cartography firsthand. Her current work focuses on emerging frontiers in mapping and AI. She holds a PhD in Forestry and Natural Resources and an MS in Environmental Engineering & Science from Clemson University\, with an emphasis on water resources. A Santa Cruz native\, she also serves as a Water Commissioner for the City of Santa Cruz and is a guest lecturer at UCSC. \n \nMr. W. Kailen Wright has been a key figure in Google Geo for over 18 years\, within a geospatial career spanning more than two decades. As a Geospatial Lead\, he works on complex global data challenges\, including standardized addressing systems\, large-scale geospatial data ingestion\, and AI-powered geospatial workflows. His foundational contributions include work with the Google Earth Vector Team and the Ground Truth project. He holds a BS in Computer Science and completed three years of graduate study in Remote Sensing and Geography at UC Santa Barbara. SUMMARY:Seminar Series | Is the Farm a Digital Factory?: Labor\, Leafy Greens\, and the Limits of Automation with Summer Sullivan
DESCRIPTION:Host:Madeleine Fairbairn \nSilicon Valley investors\, entrepreneurs\, and engineers are increasingly interested in agriculture as a site to disrupt and improve upon with their technologies. The nearby Salinas Valley – known as the Salad Bowl of the World – might be considered a “ground zero” for these operations of technological introduction\, with some calling it the Silicon Valley of Agriculture. This exit talk showcases my research on the evolving context in which new technologies are transforming social and environmental relations\, especially for already exploited\, racialized workers in the Salinas Valley. I trace the uneven ways in which agricultural automation is unfolding\, but also its profound limits within the region’s delicate\, leafy farming systems. Through interviews\, focus groups\, participant observation\, and historical analysis\, I will show how the materiality of crops such as lettuce continues to organize labor and limit full automation. SUMMARY:Seminar Series | Living Roots: The Promise of Perennial Foods with Liz Carlisle
DESCRIPTION:Host: Dani Klawitter \nLiving Roots makes the case for putting perennial foods at the center of our farms and our plates\, to add flavor and nutrients to our diets while reducing emissions and making our food system more resilient to climate change and economic uncertainty. With contributions from James Beard Award-winning chefs\, Macarthur genius grant-winning scientists\, and a host of farmers who are leading the way on perennializing agriculture\, the book takes readers on a behind-the-scenes tour of the largest food forest in the United States\, the test plots developing the first commercial perennial grains\, and the vast grasslands where Indigenous communities are returning bison to their prairie homelands. In the process\, each contributor shares their unique story of learning with these long-lived plants about how to root deeper in the face of existential challenges\, speaking directly to readers charting their own path on a rapidly changing planet. SUMMARY:Corporations at Climate Crossroads: Book Talk with Lily Hsueh
DESCRIPTION:With climate risks growing\, climate action facing political headwinds in many countries\, and international cooperation increasingly challenged\, Lily Hsueh’s Corporations at Climate Crossroads illuminates how and under what conditions the world’s largest corporations have taken proactive action on climate change during the years leading up to and after the Paris Agreement. \nDrawing on insights from economics\, political science\, and management\, the author uncovers how corporations and their leaders are key players in a nested structure of climate change governance. Hsueh shows that corporate leaders’ climate actions are shaped by bottom-up and top-down institutions and incentives involving firm\, regulatory\, and global governance. To navigate uncertainty\, corporate responses to the climate challenge are therefore an interplay of internal firm leadership\, complementary capabilities in adjacent areas\, and strategic and proactive engagement with regulatory process and global governance.
