SUMMARY:CM Seminar: Speaker - Yung-Ju (Stanley) Chang "Building Intelligence Around Limited Human Attention: Our Research Trajectory Toward Attention-Aware Agentic System"
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Yung-Ju (Stanley) Chang\, Professor\, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) \nDescription: Human attention has become an increasingly scarce resource in everyday digital life. People are constantly exposed to notifications\, messages\, news updates\, social media content\, and AI-generated information\, all competing for limited attentional capacity. In this talk\, I will share our research trajectory around human attention\, highlighting how attention has served as a primary focus across our work over the past decade. I will organize this body of work around five main directions: 1) protecting attention from unnecessary interruptions\, 2) utilizing attention during opportune moments\, 3) guiding attention toward important information\, 4) saving attention by delegating routine work to intelligent agents\, and 5) tracking attention through smartphone behavior. I will highlight representative projects that illustrate how we have approached each of these directions. Building on this trajectory\, I will discuss how these lines of work are shaping our current and future exploration of agentic systems centered on human attention. \nBio: Yung-Ju (Stanley) Chang is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) and a Joint Research Fellow at the Research Center for Humanities and Social Sciences\, Academia Sinica\, Taiwan. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor. He leads the Agentic Intelligence for Mobile Engagement and Experience (AIMEX) Lab. His research spans mobile attention and multitasking\, mobile media consumption\, human–agent interaction\, mobile crowdsourcing\, social media influencers\, and digital wellbeing. He collaborates across disciplines and has worked closely with scholars in communication to understand how people engage with different forms of media content. \nHosted by: Associate Professor of Computational Media\, Christina Chung \nZoom Link: https://ucsc.zoom.us/j/94103955103?pwd=od4ueavRt06ECpwAwqvgofwn5Suyal.1 \nConfirmed Seminar Location: SVC\, Room 3212

SUMMARY:Zhao\, Z. (CSE) - TOWARD VERIFIABLE REASONING IN LLMS
DESCRIPTION:Chain-of-thought (CoT) prompting can improve final-answer performance\, but it does not guarantee that intermediate reasoning steps are faithful\, valid\, or checkable. This proposal studies how formal methods can make natural-language reasoning more reliable by translating CoT rationales into Lean artifacts\, checking the resulting theorem statements and proofs\, and using compiler feedback to diagnose and repair failures. The completed work evaluates direct zero-shot and few-shot auto-formalization pipelines for quantity- and logic-focused reasoning problems\, measuring proof type-check rate\, theorem-statement validity\, assumption faithfulness\, and repair behavior. The ongoing work extends this pipeline with AMR-guided semantic representations and altered-rationale stress tests. The planned work proposes methods of modeling LLM Agent thinking in Lean. Together\, these components separate two questions that are often conflated: whether a model translated the reasoning into the right formal goal\, and whether that goal can be proved once translated. The research goal is to develop an evaluation framework and a tool-supported workflow to improve the reliability\, auditability\, and semantic faithfulness of LLM reasoning. \nEvent Host: Zekun Zhao\, Ph.D. Student\, Computer Science & Engineering \nAdvisor: Jeffrey Flanigan \nZoom: https://ucsc.zoom.us/j/96068207641?pwd=anTpLhBXhIdaIhXKDTB32HlDMA6uIO.1 \nPasscode: 656037

SUMMARY:Lietz\, R. (CM) - Reflecting on Failure: Designing and Evaluating Archetype Profiles as a Tool for Self-Reflection
DESCRIPTION:Self-reflection holds significant potential for learning\, behavior change\, and emotional processing\, yet designing technologies that effectively support it remains challenging\, particularly when reflection involves difficult experiences such as failure. Most current technologies avoid negative experiences altogether\, leaving users without support at precisely the moments when reflection could be most valuable.\nThis dissertation investigates how technology can better support self-reflection through three mixed-methods studies. The first examines how people experience and reflect on failure\, revealing how identity\, self-blame\, and emotional avoidance create barriers to productive reflection. These findings informed an iterative design process through which archetype profiles emerged as a promising reflective format. The second study evaluated archetype profiles against standard graph-based visualizations\, finding that the quiz-profile sequence effectively scaffolded reflection by supporting emotional re-engagement followed by cognitive reframing. The third study extended this work into a collaborative context\, examining archetype profiles derived from sleep tracking data as shareable artifacts for social reflection. Across these studies\, this dissertation contributes empirical insights into reflection on failure and design knowledge about archetype profiles as a reflective format. \nEvent Host: Rebecca Lietz\, Ph.D. Candidate\, Computational Media \nAdvisor: Steve Whittaker \nZoom: https://ucsc.zoom.us/j/7855885795?pwd=RS9mWXhQOXNyNmRVSzQrd1MzamJVQT09 \nPasscode: 172404
